SAN DIEGO—Roxie Wiblin matched her career-high with 20 kills and notched her second double-double of the season in No. 20 San Diego's 3-1 victory over Portland on Wednesday evening in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (3-0, 3-0 WCC) took the first of a two-match series with the Pilots (0-5, 0-5 WCC), 25-15, 28-30, 25-14, 25-14.
Laura Madill directed the offense to a .352 hitting percentage, collecting a career-high 49 assists with three players recording double-digit kills.

Wiblin tallied 14 digs to collect her second double-double, adding three aces to finish with another career-high, 23 points.
Thana Fayad collected 15 kills, 14 digs for her first double-double of the season and
Grace Frohling chipped in 11 kills, 8 digs. Madill was the third Torero to record a double-double adding 13 digs to go with her 49 assists.
The Toreros were tough from the service line, collecting 12 aces compared to just 3 from the Pilots. Wiblin, Frohling and freshman
Alex Hoglund all collected three aces in the contest.

Defensively, the Toreros finished the night with 71 digs, including 19 from
Camryn Tastad—a new career-high. USD tallied eight team blocks, led by
Lauren Turner and
Elly Schraeder who both finished with four block assists.

The teams traded the lead to begin the match before the Toreros put together an 8-1 run behind tough serving from Frohling and Fayad and timely kills from Wiblin and Madill. Wiblin followed up her seventh kill of the set with an ace to take the first frame, 25-15.

The second set was back and forth battle that saw 16 ties and eight lead changes. The Toreros held set point 24-21 before four-straight points put the Pilots on top 25-24. Portland fought off four set-points to take the second frame, 30-28.

USD jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the third set, sparked by tough serving from freshman
Alex Hoglund, who tallied two aces in the run. The Toreros hit a match-best .428 in the set to cruise to a 25-14 third-set victory and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

After battling to a 9-9 tie in the final frame, USD outscored the Pilots 15-4 to bring the Toreros to match point, 24-13. Portland held off one match point before Frohling sent a kill of the block to seal the set victory, 25-14 and the match, 3-1.

The Toreros will remain in the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday to face the Pilots in the second match of the series, beginning at 4 p.m. PT.
