Career Night for Wiblin, but Toreros Fall to Waves

Wiblin notches 20 kills but USD falls, 3-1 in opening match with Pepperdine

SAN DIEGO—Roxie Wiblin matched her career high with 20 kills but No. 21 San Diego fell to No. 20 Pepperdine, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (11-4, 11-4 WCC) played four tightly contested sets against the Waves (14-2, 14-1 WCC) 25-19, 20-25, 23-25 and 21-25. Wiblin hit .356 in the contest and notched her eighth double-double of the year, finishing with 10 digs.

Thana Fayad also recorded double-digit kills, hitting at a scorching .500 clip with 13 kills on 24 swings and just one error. Grace Frohling added eight kills and Katies Lukes finished with five.

Isadora Terçariol recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 37 assists, 10 digs and directing the offense to a .301 hitting percentage. Annie Benbow led the Toreros in the back court with 11 digs on the afternoon.

USD was playing shorthanded at the middle blocker position with outsides Kylie Pries and Lukes making the starts, but the Toreros still collected 10 team blocks in the match. Pries led the way with six block assists, while Fayad finished with four blocks (1 solo) and all six Torero blockers recorded at least one block on the day.

It was the Waves who took an early 10-5 lead in set one, but an 12-4 run put USD in front 17-14. There Toreros continued to build their lead and outscored Pepperdine, 7-3 down the stretch to close out the first set, 25-19. San Diego hit at a .500 clip in the set, paced by Wiblin and Fayad with four kills each and Frohling with three.

USD picked up where they left off with a 5-3 lead to start the second frame, but five quick points put the Waves on top, 8-5. Another 5-2 run by Pepperdine extended the lead 13-9 and the teams battle back-and-forth before USD pulled within two, 19-17. A 4-0 run gave Waves breathing room again at 23-17. The Toreros fought off two set points with kills from Lukes and Frohling but the Waves took the second frame, 25-20, to tie the match 1-1.

The teams traded points to a 7-7 in the third set, before a 6-2 run gave Pepperdine the lead at 13-9. With the Waves leading 18-12, USD went on a five-point run with kills by Fayad, Wiblin and Terçariol and a timely block from Pries and Terçariol to pull within one, 18-17. USD stayed close down the stretch, holding off set point, 24-23 but a kill by Pepperdine's Rachel Ahrens closed out the set and gave the Waves a 2-1 lead in the match.

The final set saw 10 ties and three lead changes in a back-and-forth battle. USD took the early lead in set four, 9-7 before five-straight points put Pepperdine in command, 12-9. However, the Toreros wouldn't go quietly, answering with a run of their own, 9-3 to jump back in front, 18-15. Another 5-0 run made it 20-18, Pepperdine before a kill by Wiblin—her 20th of the match—pulled USD back within one point. The Toreros battled down to the wire but Pepperdine closed out the match on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-21, and the match 3-1.

USD will close out the regular season with its second match against the Waves on Saturday at 2 p.m. (PT) in the JCP. The Toreros will celebrate seniors Roxie Wiblin, Thana Fayad, Cami May and Hannah Patrick prior to the match.
