Sensational Seniors

Wiblin and Fayad both notch double-doubles and combine for 40 kills on senior day

SAN DIEGO—Seniors Roxie Wiblin and Thana Fayad combined for 40 kills to lead No. 21 San Diego past No. 20 Pepperdine, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

On a day dedicated to the seniors, nobody shone brighter. Wiblin set new career highs in kills (21) and digs (18) with her ninth double-double of the season and tied her career high with 23 points. Fayad finished with 19 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double and hit at a blazing .471 clip in the match.

The Toreros (12-4, 12-4 WCC) were efficient on both sides of the ball, hitting .289 as a team while holding the Waves (14-3, 14-2 WCC) to their second lowest hitting percentage of the season (.152). USD was firing on all cylinders, dominating 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 in the regular season finale.

Grace Frohling collected five of USD's nine service aces and added six kills, three blocks and six digs. Isadora Terçariol finished with a season high 46 assists and Annie Benbow tallied 17 digs in the back court. Along with Frohling, Kylie Pries also led the way with three blocks in the middle.

The teams stayed knotted up in the first set to a 13-13 tie before a five-point run put the Waves on top, 18-14. USD answered immediately with a five-point run of its own with Terçariol at the service line to take the lead again, 19-18. A late 4-1 run gave the Toreros the advantage, 23-22 but the Waves closed out the set with three straight points to take it 25-23.

USD took an early 12-8 lead in the second set behind a combined five kills from Wiblin and Fayad. The teams traded three-point runs to make it 15-11 and battled to an 18-15 USD lead before the Toreros took control of the set. Wiblin collected four kills in a 7-3 run for the Toreros to close out the second set 25-18 and tie the match 1-1. USD held the Waves to their lowest hitting percentage of the match, at .067.

The Toreros carried that momentum into the third set, taking a 5-1 lead with tough serving from Terçariol and Wiblin. USD continued to build on its lead before back-to-back aces by Frohling gave the Toreros a commanding 19-9 lead. San Diego hit a match-best .435 to cruise to a third-set victory, 25-15 and take the 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final frame, an early seven-point serving run from Frohling—including three aces—put USD on top 9-2. The Toreros maintained their lead the rest of the way behind seven kills from Fayad and never looked back. USD closed out the set with four-consecutive points and fittingly ended the match with Fayad's 19th kill to take it 25-17.

With the regular season wrapped up, San Diego will have a week off while several other WCC teams compete in makeup contests that were postponed earlier this season. The Toreros await their postseason fate with the NCAA Tournament selection show is set for Sunday, April 4.
