SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (5-8) swept Long Beach State (0-2) in double header action on Thursday night at the USD Softball Complex. The victory in game two came in walk off fashion as freshman
Sofia Delgado delivered in the bottom of the seventh.
GAME 1 | San Diego 4, Long Beach State 0
Freshman
McKenna Braegelmann delivered in game one, striking out eight over seven innings of work to help power the Toreros past the Beach 4-0.
In addition to her eight strikeouts, Braegelmann (3-0) tossed seven shutout innings while giving up one hit and walking four for San Diego.
At the plate, the Toreros were paced by Delgado, who went 2-for-2 in the ballgame with an RBI. Senior
Hayley Hensley also contributed, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior
Rion Simms also helped out for San Diego, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.
The Toreros took the lead for good in the second as Delgado's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for San Diego.
The Toreros also added runs in the fourth and sixth innings on the way to the 4-0 victory.
GAME 2 | San Diego 3, Long Beach State 2
San Diego rallied to score two in the seventh inning and walked it off on a single off the bat of Delgado to pick up the 3-2 victory over Long Beach State in game two.
Freshman
Katlin Entrup (1-2) got the win for San Diego. The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Sophomore
Courtney Rose also pitched well, going four innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking one and striking out one.
Junior
Lauren Hendrickson led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with two RBIs. Delgado put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a clutch RBI. Freshman
Malia Benson also helped out, going 2-for-3 for the Toreros.
Trailing 1-0, the Toreros first put runs on the board in the third inning. Hendrickson delivered with a hard hit to third base as freshman
Amanda Limon scored from second on heads up base running.
Long Beach State then broke the tied and took a 2-1 lead before San Diego scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to grab the win. Hendrickson executed with a suicide squeeze to tie it at two a piece before Delgado came through with runners in scoring position to walk it off on an RBI single.
The Toreros are back in action on Friday, when they will take on Utah State at 3 and 5:30 p.m. (PT).
