SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (5-3, 0-0 WCC) battled to defeat UC San Diego (1-5, 0-0 Big West) on Friday afternoon at Triton Ballpark, prevailing by a 15-10 margin to earn its second straight win after an offense-filled game that lasted more than four hours.
The Toreros scored in every inning except for the top of the sixth and seventh, bringing runners home in five consecutive frames to open the contest. Despite several comeback attempts from the Tritons, USD never trailed after jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and at one point led by as many as eight runs.
San Diego's big day at the plate was headlined by a five-run second inning and a four-run third. Every player in the USD starting lineup got at least one hit, while six Toreros had multi-hit games.
Cody Jefferis and
Paul Kunst were tied for the team lead in hits on the day, each notching three. Jefferis scored three runs and recorded an RBI behind two doubles, while Kunst — who entered the game in the third inning as a defensive substitution —plated three runners with three singles and scored a run.
Will Worthington also drove in three runs on Friday afternoon, going 2-2 with a double and a run scored.
Shane McGuire launched his fourth home run of the season in the top of the second, a two-run blast that marked his team-leading 11th and 12th RBIs of the year.
Carter Rustad started the game on the mound for San Diego, and pitched three innings while surrendering five earned runs on six hits. The freshman right-hander struck out four batters and walked three.
Rustad was relieved by freshman lefty
Brycen Mautz, who went 2 2/3 innings and gave up another five earned runs on six hits, striking out one batter and walking none. Mautz received the win for Friday's game.
True freshman
Ivran Romero closed out the game for San Diego in dominant fashion, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out five batters. He allowed just two hits and a walk. The Poway High School graduate has now thrown 10 consecutive scoreless innings in relief to begin his college career.
The series between the Toreros and the Tritons now moves to Fowler Park for a pair of day games on Saturday and Sunday. Both contests are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
