SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (6-3, 0-0 WCC) scored double-digit runs for the fifth time this season as it beat UC San Diego (1-6, 0-0 Big West) by a 10-2 margin on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park to earn its third straight win.
The Toreros' 10-run barrage was headlined by a four-RBI day from third baseman
Adam Lopez, who went 2-4 with a run scored. The San Diego product (Southwestern College/Grossmont High School) delivered the most decisive hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth, driving in three with a bases-clearing double that split the right-center field gap and extended the USD lead to eight runs. He now leads the team with 14 RBIs.
Paul Kunst continued his hot streak at the plate, notching another three hits after a three-hit game at Triton Ballpark on Friday. He sent a game-tying RBI single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the second, quickly erasing a short-lived Triton advantage that was their first and only lead of the series thus far.
Cody Jefferis was 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI, raising his average to .436 on the year.
Tora Otsuka,
Shane McGuire, and
Caleb Ricketts each came around to score two runs each, and six different USD players recorded RBIs on the day.
Jack Hyde started Saturday afternoon's game on the mound for USD in what marked his first appearance of 2021. The freshman right-hander pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out two. He was able to settle in after allowing a run in the top of the first, throwing 3 2/3 scoreless frames to end his outing.
Hyde was relieved by redshirt freshman
Conner Thurman, who tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of his own. He fanned four Triton batters, which included striking out the side in the top of the sixth, and received the win for Saturday's game.
Left-hander
Eddy Pelc closed out the game for USD, going two innings while surrendering one earned run to finalize the 10-2 victory for San Diego.
The Toreros' series with the Tritons concludes tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Fowler Park.
