Errors Prove Costly in Game Two Rally

San Diego falls in double header action on Saturday

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - San Diego softball (10-20, 2-3 WCC) fell in double header action at LMU (16-17, 4-1 WCC) on Saturday afternoon, dropping games one and two in the three-game series.

San Diego rallied in game two and led by one until the bottom of the seventh, as the Lions took advantage of two errors to secure a 7-3 win.

GAME 1 | San Diego 2, LMU 4
San Diego faced a pitchers' duel in game one as both teams remained scoreless through the fourth inning. A late offensive effort by the Toreros came up just shy as USD dropped game one 2-4.

Madison Earnshaw (3-9) got the start in the circle and took the loss for San Diego giving up four hits, four runs with only two earned in 4.2 innings of work. Courtney Rose came through out of the bullpen for the Toreros going 1.1 shutout innings while striking out one.

The Lions struck first in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run. LMU tacked on two more on a grounder to third and a double. Rose then entered the circle and retired the side forcing a popup to second.

San Diego's offense rallied in the top of the seventh as Sofia Delgado hit her first collegiate homerun to bring the Toreros within two. The two-run shot would be the sole RBIs in the top of the inning as the Toreros fell 2-4.

GAME 2 | San Diego 3, LMU 7
Late errors in the bottom of the seventh proved costly as a rally to take game two came up shy with the Toreros falling 3-7.

Katlin Entrup (1-4) took the loss in relief for San Diego, pitching two innings, giving up five runs none earned on three hits.

At the plate, freshman Delgado was once again a bright spot for the Toreros in game two going 2-for-3 with a double. Alexia Torculas put together a noteworthy performance as well hitting her first career homerun and going 1-for-2 in the ballgame. Veteran Sophia Bjerk also contributed going 2-for-3 in the contest.

The Toreros found themselves down 2-0 in game two before the offense rallied behind the bat of Torculas in the top of the fifth. Her solo shot sparked an offensive rally as three more hitters would single in the inning.

Malia Benson singled up the middle to load the bases for USD, before Rion Simms came through with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two apiece.

The Toreros took the lead in the top of the sixth as Savannah Alarcon scored off a sac fly from Torculas to make it 3-2 USD.

The defense was unable to hold on in the bottom of the seventh, committing three errors as the Lions tacked on five runs to take game two. Entrup surrendered a grand slam in the final batter, the sole hit of the inning, as the Toreros fell 3-7.

San Diego will look to avoid the sweep with game three of the series set for Sunday at noon (PT) at LMU.
