Final Nonconference and Home Stand on Deck

San Diego will travel to CSUN, before returning home against Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (10-24, 2-7 WCC) will complete its nonconference slate on the road at CSUN (3-15, 3-15 Big West) on Wednesday, April 28 before returning for its final home stand against Santa Clara (6-16, 3-6 WCC).
 
The Toreros will travel to Northridge, Calif. for a double header at 1 and 3 p.m. (PT) to wrap up an eight-game road stretch. The series against Santa Clara will get underway at noon and 2 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, May 1 and wrap up on Sunday, May 2 at noon (PT).

LAST TIME OUT
  • San Diego fell in three straight games to WCC leader BYU as the Toreros battled in games one and three.
  • A strong defensive effort in game three held a potent BYU offense to only .222 with runners in scoring position.
  • Madison Earnshaw shined from the circle facing 29 hitters, forcing nine ground balls and five fly outs while striking out three.
  • Sofia Delgado led the Toreros offensive efforts going 1-for-3 at the plate as San Diego threatened in the top of the fourth.
  • San Diego remained within one run of the Cougars until the bottom of the sixth inning when BYU tacked on two more insurance runs.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST CSUN
  • San Diego holds advantage in the all-time series at 5-4. The Toreros have yet to win in Northridge and trails 0-1 all time.
  • The last matchup against the Matadors served as the final two contests of the abbreviated 2020 campaign. The Toreros took the double header, winning 2-1 and 4-3 at the USD Softball Complex.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SANTA CLARA
  • San Diego also leads in the all-time series against the Broncos at 63-53. Neither team holds advantage at the USD Softball Complex at 25-25 all-time.
  • The series will mark the first matchup since the 2019 campaign where San Diego was swept in three games at home.
 
LOOKING TO BREAK THROUGH ON THE ROAD
  • The Toreros are looking to find their rhythm on the road with the last victory away from home coming on March 21 at UC San Diego in La Jolla.
  • The matchup against CSUN serves as two of the final five road contests for San Diego during the regular season.
  • San Diego's final road test will come next weekend at Saint Mary's.
 
SENDING OFF THE SENIORS
  • Sunday's contest will serve as Senior Day for the Toreros as the team will honor three seniors in Halle Kyler, Hayley Hensley and Hannah Boos.
  • Kyler will leave San Diego as a four-year starter and a crucial utility player, with over 60 appearances in the circle in 119 games played. The Lakeside, Calif. native hit a career-high .333 in her debut season for the Toreros and slugged six doubles last.
  • Hensley has emerged in her final two-seasons as a key piece of the lineup starting 47 contests so far in her junior and senior year campaigns. The Huntington Beach native knocked a career-high 21 hits during the abbreviated 2020 season with three doubles and a homerun.
  • Boos has been a key member of San Diego's pitching staff over four seasons, earning 45 appearances and 23 starts in the circle over her career. The right hander has thrown over 130 innings while striking out 67 and giving up only six homeruns.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Pitching has served as the bright spot during the 2021 campaign, as the Toreros staff currently ranks second in the WCC in ERA.
  • Freshman McKenna Braegelmann continues to lead the talented pitching group with a team best 2.02 ERA. Braegelmann also garners the sole winning record of the pitching staff at 5-1.
  • In game one against BYU, the pitching staff held the Cougars to the lowest amount of runs in four contests.
  • Earnshaw helped the Toreros respond from the circle in game three, holding BYU to three runs.
