Career Night From Frohling Leads USD to Comeback Win

No. 21 USD rallies from 2-1 deficit to beat Trojans by 3-2 margin

LOS ANGELES — Grace Frohling tied a career high in kills and points as No. 21 San Diego women's volleyball earned a gritty comeback win on Friday night at USC, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Trojans (4-5, 0-0 Pac-12) in five sets.

Led by Frohling's career-best 19 kills, the Toreros (6-2, 0-0 WCC) hit .203 as a team, bolstered by 11 kills from Kylie Pries, 10 from Katie Lukes, and five from Leyla Blackwell. Frohling added a pair of aces and six digs for a career-best 24.5 total points on Friday evening, while libero Annie Benbow had a match-best 19 digs and Pries added 12 digs. On the defensive side of things, Gabby Goddard paced the Toreros with a solo block and seven block assists, good for 9.5 points.

USD jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the first set by a score of 25-22, then dropped the ensuing two sets by 25-20 and 25-13 margins. San Diego then took down USC by scores of 25-19 and 15-13 to secure the 3-2 decision and its third win in a row.

The first set saw the Toreros hit just .114 as a team but prevail via a combined 10 kills from Pries (2), Blackwell (3), Frohling (4), and Lukes (1). Benbow added five digs, and Goddard tallied five block assists. The set remained back-and-forth until its final stages, with the score tied at 20 points apiece before USD pulled ahead and earned the 25-20 win.

Set two was similarly hard-fought as the teams traded points enroute to an 18-18 tie, but the Trojans pulled ahead late and built a 25-20 lead the Toreros could not overcome.

In the third set, USC put together an early advantage and never looked back, leading by as many as 12 points as it won the 25-13 decision. Pries and Lukes had two kills each, while Goddard and Lukes each notched a single block.

San Diego stormed back in the fourth set, transforming an 8-8 tie into a decisive 3-0 run that pushed the score to 11-8 and forced USC into taking a timeout. Though the Trojans came back to tie the set at 18 points apiece, USD wouldn't trail again, scoring five unanswered points to make it 22-18, then another three to close it out and tie the match at two. Frohling put up five kills, and Pries and Lukes each had three. Blackwell enjoyed her most dominant defensive set with five block assists, and Benbow had five digs.

Though USD led early on in the fifth, the match would finish in close fashion. USD and USC were tied as late as 13-13, but three clutch kills from Pries, Goddard, and Frohling earned the Toreros the 15-13 win in the set, and the 3-2 comeback win in the match. Frohling had another five kills in the set, Lukes had three, and Goddard and Pries each had two.

The Toreros are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Long Beach State to take on the Beach at 4 p.m.
