Katie Lukes combined to hit .386 with 19 kills,
Leyla Blackwell had five kills and four total blocks, and No. 25 San Diego women's volleyball (8-3, 2-0 WCC) cruised to a 3-0 victory over Pacific (3-10, 0-2 WCC) on Saturday afternoon as they swept the visiting Tigers inside Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The first set was a back and forth affair, with the Toreros gaining their first lead of the game at 18-17. After trading a few points, San Diego settled in and won four of the last 5 to take the set 25-22. The Toreros hit .462 in the first set behind a jaw-dropping .714 from Pries. Defense also continued to be a strength for the Toreros, recording five blocks in the opening frame.
The second set was all Toreros as they never trailed. The Tigers equalized at 2-2 before the Toreros took over. Reeling off nine of the next 11 points, the Toreros kept the visitors out of striking distance, leading to a 25-19 set win. Blackwell put the exclamation point onto the set by hammering home a quick set to finish things off. San Diego continued to excel defensively, tallying five more blocks in the second set.Â
The Tigers won the first point of the third set, before the Toreros took 10 of the next 11 points. After that, the Tigers never got within four points for the remainder of the set en route to a 25-13 set win. Lukes, Blackwell, and Grace Frohling combined for 14 kills in the final set on .414 hitting between the three of them. San Diego managed two more blocks in the final frame.
Lukes once again led the way, hitting .379 with 12 kills and adding five digs for good measure. Blackwell continued to be a force in the middle with four total blocks and five kills on .556 hitting. Frohling continued her multifaceted play with eight kills, five digs and 2.5 total blocks.Â
Libero Annie Benbow had 12 digs and one assist. Setter Isadora Tercariol added six digs to go along with 28 assists.Â
The Toreros are on the road this week as they continue WCC play against San Francisco. First serve will be at 7 p.m. (PT) on September 30. They will then head to Santa Clara for a Saturday afternoon matchup beginning at 1 p.m. (PT).
