Balanced Offense Dominates Hawaii

No. 22 San Diego swept the Rainbow Wahine, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—No. 22 San Diego got its first sweep of the season, defeating Hawaii (RV) in straight sets to open the Utah Classic on Friday afternoon in the Huntsman Center.
 
The Toreros (2-1) saw double-digit kill performances from Katie Lukes and Grace Frohling to take down the Rainbow Wahine, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19, in their first match of a double-header. USD will return to the court for an evening match with the host, No. 19 Utah at 6 p.m. (PT).
 
Lukes put up 15 kills with a .303 hitting percentage to lead all hitters, while Frohling added 12 kills and 11 digs for her second double-double of the young season. Gabby Goddard and Kylie Pries also had productive days at the net with eight kills apiece. Goddard hit .500 in the match and added a team-best four blocks in the contest.
 
Isadora Terçariol had the offense clicking at a .272 hitting percentage, and siding out at 70 percent in the match, tallying 42 assists. Terçariol also added 12 digs for her second double-double in as many matches, while Annie Benbow led the charge in the back court with a match-high 14 digs.
 
San Diego dominated UH in aces, 5-0, while the Rainbow Wahine held the advantage in blocks, 10-5. USD's defense limited Hawii to a .030 hitting percentage on the day.
 
It was all San Diego to start the match, after an early 14-1 run gave USD a dominant 19-4 lead. After hitting .647 midway through the set, San Diego cooled off to finish at .256 but the Toreros took the opening frame easily, 25-13.
 
USD carried the momentum into the second set with an early 5-1 lead, however UH countered with a run of its own to tie take the lead 9-6. The teams traded points to a 14-14 tied before San Diego put together a 7-0 run to take the commanding lead once again. USD closed out the set with three-straight points for a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
After jumping out to an early 6-2 advantage, USD never relinquished the lead in the final frame. Lukes led the way, collecting six of her 15 kills in the set and the Toreros generated a 78 sideout percentage to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
 
Up next, USD will take on the Utes in the evening match, set for 6 p.m. (PT). The Toreros will wrap up the weekend on Saturday against Cal Poly at 3:30 p.m. (PT).
