Toreros Sweep to Close Out Utah Classic

No. 22 San Diego defeated Cal Poly, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—No. 22 San Diego got its second sweep of the weekend with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon in Huntsman Center.
 
The Toreros (3-2) wrapped up the Utah Classic with another dominant performance, hitting .302 in the match while holding the Mustangs (2-5) to a .157 clip.
 
Kylie Pries and Grace Frohling led the offense with 10 kills each. Frohling finished one dig shy of her third double-double of the year, leading the team with nine digs and Pries chipped in seven.
 
USD notched double-digit team blocks for the third time this season, finishing with 10. Leyla Blackwell tallied six blocks, while Gabby Goddard added four. Blackwell also finished third on the team with six kills.
 
Isadora Terçariol collected 30 assists in the match and finished the day with three aces.
 
It was all USD to start the match, building a commanding 18-10 lead behind three early kills from Frohling and three from Pries. The Mustangs never pulled closer than six points and the Toreros closed out the set with three-straight points, including back-to-back blocks from Blackwell and Frohling. USD hit a blazing .458 as a team in the opening set, collecting 13 kills on 24 swings with two errors.
 
USD again took the early lead 6-3 before Cal Poly rallied to tie the set at 10-10. The teams traded points before a 5-1 run gave USD a cushion. The Toreros continued to build their lead and closed out the set on an 8-3 run to take it, 25-18 and lead the match 2-0.
 
After trailing 4-5 in the final frame, San Diego went on a 10-1 run including three blocks and a service ace by Alex Hoglund. The Mustangs pulled with four points at 17-13, but the Toreros answered with five consecutive points to stop the CP momentum. At 24-14, Cal Poly held off six match points before San Diego finally closed out the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
 
San Diego's Grace Frohling and Katie Lukes were named to the all-tournament team after their strong performances on the weekend. Frohling finished with 40 kills in 10 sets to average 4.00 kills per set. Lukes dominated in two matches, collecting 34 kills in seven sets to average 4.86 kills per set and a .386 hitting percentage.
 
Up next, the Toreros will host No. 18 UCLA in their home opener in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match is set for Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. (PT).
