Women's Basketball Defeats LMU by 32 Points for Second WCC Win

The Toreros beat LMU 80-48 in Los Angeles on Thursday Night

SAN DIEGO — The Toreros had a phenomenal 32-point win over LMU at Gersten Pavilion on Thursday night. Tonight marks the second highest scoring game of the 2021-22 season behind their 33-point win over Hawaii on November 9, 2021. This is San Diego's fourth consecutive win and second win in WCC play. 

San Diego (10-4, 2-0) dominated LMU (5-7, 0-2) with 35 rebounds, 22 steals, and 25 assists. On offense, Sydney Hunter led the Toreros in double-digit scoring with 14 points. Also leading the Toreros includes Laura Erikstrup with 11 points, Steph Gorman and Kasey Neubert with 10 points each. On offense, Erica Martinsen flexed her impressive court vision and set a new career high of eight assists. Behind Martinsen was Jordyn Edwards with seven assists followed by Ayanna Khalfani with three assists. 

On defense, San Diego protected the rim with Kasey Neubert and Jordyn Edwards leading the Toreros in rebounds. Neubert and Edwards had six rebounds each. The Toreros were explosive on defense with three players recording five steals each: Jordyn Edwards, Steph Gorman, and Erica Martinsen.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • San Diego had seven steals in the first quarter. Kiera Oakry led the team with three followed by Steph Gorman with two.
  • Erica Martinsen had five assists and two steals in the second quarter.
  • San Diego tallied 11 rebounds in the second quarter.
  • Jordyn Edwards led the team in steals and assists with three each in the third quarter.
  • The Toreros scored 22 points in the fourth quarter; this is the third quarter San Diego scored 22 points.
  • San Diego had seven steals in the fourth quarter led by Kiera Oakry, Gorman, and Edwards with two each. 

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Erica Martinsen set a new career high of eight assists. Martinsen beat her previous record of four assists against Fullerton on December 8, 2020.
  • Martinsen tied her career high of five steals. The last time she recorded five steals was against San Diego Christian on December 11, 2020.
  • Kasey Neubert tied her career high of ten points. Neubert last scored ten points against Idaho on November 14.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Toreros will continue their road trek and travel to Spokane, WA to take on Gonzaga on Saturday, January 15 at 2 PM. San Diego holds a 23-48 all time record against Gonzaga with a four game losing streak. Their last match up took place on February 20, 2020 and resulted in a 69-47 loss under head coach Cindy Fisher
