Toreros Fall Short in Battle Against Gonzaga

San Diego lost 76-66 in a tough battle

SAN DIEGO — The Toreros battled hard against the Zags but came up short in a 76-66 loss on Saturday afternoon. Kiera Oakry had a phenomenal game setting a new career high of 24 points. To accomplish this impressive feat, Okary shot 6-9 from the field and 3-4 from the three-points line.

On offense, Kiera Okary led the team in scoring with 24 points followed by Kylie Horstmeyer and Laura Erikstrup with eight points each. Collectively, the Toreros scored nine points off fast breaks and eight points off turnovers. On defense, San Diego maintained their intensity to collect 10 steals and 36 rebounds. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Jordyn Edwards led the Toreros in steals with two in the first quarter. 
  • San Diego shot 100% from the three-point and free throw line in the first quarter.
  • Sydney Hunter tallied three rebounds for San Diego in the second quarter. 
  • San Diego had three steals in the third quarter. 
  • Kiera Oakry scored 15 points in the fourth quarter. 

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Kiera Oakry set a new career high of 24 points. Oakry beat her previous record of 22 points against San Francisco on January 8.

The Toreros will return home to play Saint Mary's on Thursday, January 20 at 6 PM. San Diego holds a 21-45 all time record against Saint Mary's with a one game winning streak. Their last matchup took place on February 11, 2021 and resulted in a 82-73 win under head coach Cindy Fisher
