Women's Basketball Falls Short to Saint Mary's

San Diego loses 79-71 at home

SAN DIEGO —The Toreros put up a tough fight against the Saint Mary's Gaels and fell short 79-71 in the fourth quarter. 

On offense, three players scored in double-digits for the Toreros on Thursday night. Leading the Toreros were Steph Gorman and Kendall Bird with 14 points each followed by Erica Martinsen with 11. Collectively, the Toreros scored 24 points off fast breaks and 23 points off turnovers. On defense, San Diego maintained their intensity to collect 19 steals and 34 rebounds. The Toreros also forced 24 turnovers on Saint Mary's.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Jordyn Edwards and Laura Erikstrup each had one steal in the first quarter.
  • Sydney Hunter collected three of San Diego's five rebounds in the second quarter. 
  • San Diego had seven steals in the third quarter. Kendall Bird led the Toreros with two steals.
  • The Toreros forced four turnovers on the Gaels in the fourth quarter. 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Toreros will continue hosting at home and play BYU on Saturday, January 22 at 1 PM which also falls on Alumni Night. San Diego holds a 8-15 all time record against BYU with a two game winning streak. Their last matchup took place on January 4, 2021 and resulted in a 58-56 win under head coach Cindy Fisher.
