Men’s Basketball Falls at Santa Clara in Overtime, 78-74

SANTA CLARA, CA – After 24 lead changes and 16 ties, Santa Clara (12-7, 2-2 WCC) escaped the San Diego men's basketball team (11-9, 4-3 WCC) in overtime on Monday, 78-74.
 
The Toreros played their third road game in five days, and put four players in double-figures. Neither team led by more than five points.
 
Graduate Terrell Brown-Soares registered his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five blocks.
 
Redshirt senior Joey Calcaterra added 13 points on 3-of-6 from long range.
 
Freshman Wayne McKinney and senior Jase Townsend each contributed 10 points and two steals.
 
San Diego drops to 11-9 (4-3 WCC) on the season, and return home to face Pepperdine on Thursday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calcaterra knocked down a running jumper and a deep triple to put USD up 8-7 early.
  • Santa Clara answered with a quick 6-0 run, and its lead of five was the largest of the first half by either team.
  • San Diego got points from multiple scorers over the last 14 minutes, including Pinchuk, Gultekin, Brown-Soares, McKinney, Parrish, Townsend, Earlington, and Calcaterra.
  • The Toreros ended the first half on a 6-0 run, including buckets from McKinney and Calcaterra and a dunk from Brown-Soares. At halftime, USD held a slight 34-32 advantage.
  • Santa Clara opened the second half on an 8-2 run, including five straight from Vrankic.
  • The Toreros regained the lead with just over 11 minutes left after four combined made free throws from Townsend and Vladimir Pinchuk.
  • Calcaterra and the Broncos each made two triples midway through the second half to swap leads.
  • A layup from McKinney and a Gultekin free throw put USD up 66-64 with 3:13 left.
  • Santa Clara took the lead twice with less than two minutes left, but Josh Parrish answered both times to tie the game.
  • McKinney got the first bucket of overtime, driving hard to the rim and finishing a layup. Later, Earlington gave USD the lead with 2:28 left on a turnaround jump shot.
  • Santa Clara ended the game with a 6-0 run to seal the win.

  • Brown-Soares is now averaging 8.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks.
  • Calcaterra went into double-figures for the 12th time this year.
  • McKinney notched double-figures for the fifth time this season.

  • Marcellus Earlington ended with nine points and eight rebounds.
  • Parrish added eight points (4-6 FG) and seven rebounds.

UP NEXT
After three road games in five days, USD returns home to face Pepperdine on Thursday. The Waves hold a 66-47 lead in the all-time series, but USD won the most recent contest on January 10, 72-62.
