Women's Basketball Falls Short in Portland Contest

The Toreros fell short 68-55 to Portland on Thursday, January 27

SAN DIEGO —The Toreros fought hard against the Portland Pilots but fell short 68-55. 

Leading the Toreros' offensive efforts were Kasey Neubert and Sydney Hunter with nine points each. Other key contributors on offense were Kendall Bird with eight points, Erica Martinsen with seven, followed by Jordyn Edwards and Steph Gorman with six points each. On offense, the Toreros tallied 14 assists. On defense, San Diego collected 30 rebounds, 14 steals, and two blocks. The Toreros also forced 27 turnovers on the Portland Pilots, five more than their matchup against BYU on January 24, 2022. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Sydney Hunter scored the first two points of the game off a rebound.
  • San Diego grabbed two steals in the first quarter. 
  • The Toreros collected eight rebounds in the second quarter. 
  • San Diego outscored Potland in the third quarter and put up 18 points.
  • The Toreros shot 100% from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.  
  • The Toreros outscored Portland off turnovers with 25 points compared to 19. 

LOOKING AHEAD
The Toreros will continue their homestand by hosting the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, January 29 at 2 p.m. PT in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. San Diego holds a 23-49 record against Gonzaga with a one game losing streak. Their last matchup took place on January 15, 2021 and resulted in a 76-66 loss under head coach Cindy Fisher.
