SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Scoring 18 points off of 14 turnovers, San Francisco (14-2, 1-0 WCC) defeated the San Diego men's basketball team (7-7, 0-1 WCC) in the conference opener, 88-73.
Sophomore guard
Bryce Monroe led the Toreros with a season-high 15 points in addition to four assists and three rebounds.
Graduate center
Terrell Brown-Soares registered his first double-double of the season, ending with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Redshirt senior guard
Joey Calcaterra added 11 points and six rebounds, while teammate
Yavuz Gultekin registered 11 points and four rebounds in the loss.
San Diego falls to 7-7 (0-1 WCC) on the season, and will travel to Pepperdine on Monday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego got on the board first with a Brown-Soares dunk, but shortly after San Francisco used a 16-3 run to take a double-digit lead.
- Monroe drilled three straight jumpers followed by a Berger layup to bring the deficit to 18-13.
- Monroe scored another four points, including two free throws, to make it 23-19 with 6:55 left in the first half.
- The Dons registered 5-0 runs on two separate occasions to close the first half, and went into the locker room with a 46-32 lead.
- Calcaterra quickly buried a triple to cut the deficit to 11 in the second half.
- Khalil Shabazz scored seven straight points for the Dons midway through the second frame, extending their lead to 66-49.
- Wayne McKinney III connected on two layups and two free throws to help battle back. USD trailed 71-57 with 7:31 left.
- San Francisco kept its lead at 13 points or more over the remaining seven minutes to secure the win.

- Monroe scored in double-figures for the fourth time this season.
- Brown-Soares is now averaging 8.4 points and 7.9 rebounds in 2021-22.
- Calcaterra registered double-digits for the eighth time this season, trailing only Marcellus Earlington for most on the team.
- Gultekin was one point shy of a career high, set against La Verne earlier this season.
- San Francisco shot 50% (35-70) from the floor.
- McKinney and Earlington added nine points each.
- The Toreros shot 15-of-17 (88%) from the free throw line.
