SPOKANE, WA – In the first game of WCC play,
Trevor Dillon scored in the 87
th minute to propel the University of San Diego men's soccer team over Gonzaga, 1-0.
USD was awarded a corner kick with just over three minutes to play, and
Mason Tunbridge sent a bending ball into the box. After multiple deflections and a blocked shot, Dillon sent a rebound to the back of the net.
San Diego is now undefeated in its last seven contests, including three wins and four ties.
USD moves to 3-3-5 on the season, and will return to Torero Stadium to welcome Saint Mary's on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gonzaga sent a shot to the upper right corner in the 31st minute, but Dubrovich made a full-extension stop to keep it scoreless.
- Tunbridge 56th minute, but his left footed shot on a pass from Cesar Bahena was saved by the goalkeeper.
- Nicklas Clausen sent a low cross across the six in the 71st minute, but Alex Churness' diving attempt was just late for the tap in.
- Ross Johnstone played a ball ahead to Tunbridge in the 86th minute, and the senior turned and dribbled through three defenders for a golden chance. The Gonzaga keeper barely got a hand on it, and USD was awarded a corner.
- Tunbridge curved a dangerous ball inside the six, and Clausen's shot was saved on the doorstep by a defender. Dillon one-touched the ball into the left side of the net for the win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Dillon scored his second goal of the season (tied with Churness for second most on the team).
- Dubrovich earned his fourth shutout of the season (second straight), lowering his goals against average to 1.09.
- USD held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal in the second half.
- Through 11 games, the Toreros have 14 points (11 more than last season).
