LOS ANGELES – The University of San Diego men's soccer team (5-4-6, 3-0-1 WCC) earned another dominating win to remain undefeated in conference play at Loyola Marymount (8-5-2, 2-2-0) on Wednesday night, 4-0.
For the second consecutive game, four different Toreros scored a goal, including freshman
Christian Vigil, freshman
Oshea Foster, freshman
Kevin Pena, and junior
Rhys Gourdie.
Vigil, along with fellow freshmen
Vicente Ayala and
Cesar Bahena, tallied assists in the victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Jason Dubrovich earned his fifth shutout of the season, ending with tying a season high with six saves.
USD improves to 5-4-6 (3-0-1 WCC) on the season, and host #7 Portland on Saturday for Senior Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego nearly took the lead in the 21st minute, as Oshea Foster dribbled up the field and sent a shot from the 18 that went inches wide.
- Alejandro Fernandez dished the ball to Bahena down the right side in the 40th minute. The freshman sent a cross inside the box, where Vigil headed it home for the 1-0 lead.
- With less than a minute to play in the first half, Dubrovich made a kick save on an LMU shot from inside the 18. At halftime, USD maintained a 1-0 lead.
- In the 59th minute, the LMU goalkeeper played short pass ahead from inside his box. Ayala won the ball and poked it ahead to Foster, who made a move to his left and scored for the 2-0 lead.
- San Diego was awarded a free kick in the 78th minute. From 30 yards out, Pena blasted a perfect shot inside the right post for the 3-0 advantage.
- Just over two minutes later, the Toreros gathered an LMU corner kick and transitioned down the field. Vigil would eventually set up Gourdie down the right side to make it 4-0.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Over the last two games, USD has recorded 24 points. 19 of them were from freshmen.
- Bahena leads the team with four assists.
- After being selected seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, San Diego currently ranks second in the conference behind #7 Portland.
- In 14 games, LMU had allowed more than two goals just once before tonight.
- Dubrovich lowered his goals against average to 1.27 with a save percentage of 0.712.
- Peña and Foster each scored for the second straight game.
