Women’s Basketball Hits the Road for Game at Portland State

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (1-0, 0-0 WCC) opens the road portion of their schedule, traveling to Portland, Ore., to face Portland State (1-0, 0-0 Big Sky) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros handled business on their home floor, defeating Biola 75-47 to start the season 1-0.
  • Kasey Neubert led all scorers with 14 points, while pulling down six rebounds. Four Toreros were in double figures, as Ayanna Khalfani, Laura Erikstrup each scored 11 points, while Kylie Horstmeyer had 10.
  • San Diego shot 42.6% from the field and scored 38 points in the paint, while getting 34 points from their bench.
 
OPPONENT HISTORY
  • The Toreros and Vikings are set to meet for the first time since 1999 as San Diego holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series.
  • In the last meeting, the Toreros rolled to an 80-44 win in Portland and have won the last three matchups.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Head Coach Cindy Fisher returns for her 18th year at the helm of the program, fresh off a second round finish at the 2022 WNIT.
  • Fisher adds two new coaches to the staff this season, as Jualeah Woods and Rachel Nagel enter their first season as assistant coaches at San Diego.
  • The Toreros return nine members of their 2021-22 unit, including Myah Pace, who was recently named to the preseason All-WCC team.
  • San Diego welcomes four newcomers to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Transfers Jess Finney (Washington) and Claire Gallagher (Lafayette) join the team as sophomores, while freshmen Melesungu Afeaki and Veronica Sheffey get set for their first season in San Diego.
  • San Diego is off to a tremendous start on the glass, recording their most rebounds in a single game since 2020 in the win over Biola.
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • The Toreros were picked to finish sixth in the 2022-23 WCC Preseason Poll. The placement was just one vote behind Saint Mary's and eight votes behind San Francisco.
  • Last season's squad let the NCAA in steals with 410 and ranked second nationally in steals per game at 12.8. The team has picked up right where they left off, tallying 20 steals in the exhibition against Concordia and seven in the win over Biola.
  • Pace is closing in on several milestones in her highly successful Torero career, sitting just 150 points away from 1,000 and 37 rebounds away from 500 in her collegiate career.
  • In addition, Pace ranks fifth all-time in career steals with 204 and is 17 away from tying Amy Kame for fourth place.
