Men’s Soccer Wins WCC Championship with 1-0 Win at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A goal in the 73rd minute from junior Nicklas Clausen propelled the University of San Diego men's soccer team (8-4-6, 6-0-1 WCC) over San Francisco (7-5-4, 0-4-2 WCC) on Saturday night, earning the Toreros their first WCC Championship since 2015.

After being selected seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, San Diego finishes the regular season undefeated in WCC play and will compete in its first NCAA Tournament in eight years.

Clausen scored the ninth goal of his career on the assist from senior Mason Tunbridge, who leads the team with 17 total points.

Senior goalkeeper Jason Dubrovich secured his seventh clean sheet of the season, making seven saves in the victory.

USD improves to 8-4-6 (6-0-1 WCC) on the season after its fifth straight win, and will await its next opponent until the NCAA Selection Show on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego nearly got on the board in the 16th minute, as Fernandez sent a blast that hit the crossbar. A follow up shot from Tunbridge fell just wide.
  • The teams went into halftime scoreless, with USD holding a slight 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Tunbridge made a move to his right just outside the 18 in the 50th minute, but the USF keeper dove to make the save. Just over 15 minutes later, he dribbled through multiple defenders and sent a low cross to Churness inside the box, but the shot was blocked.
  • USD broke through in the 73rd minute. Fernandez played a through ball to Tunbridge, who dribbled from midfield to the 18, where he played a ball to Clausen. The junior took one touch and placed it inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
  • Dubrovich made two saves over the final 2:15 to seal the win.
