Women's Basketball Defeats LMU by 28 for Second Consecutive Win

Toreros triumph over Lions 79-51

SAN DIEGO —The Toreros defeated Loyola Maymount by 28 points in the Jenny Craig Pavilion; 79-51. 

Sydney Hunter recorded her second consecutive double-double and her fourth this season. Hunter scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. She shot 9-14 from the field and went 3-3 at the free throw line. Hunter also accomplished a double-double against Pacific this past Monday, February 7 where she tallied 29 points and 14 rebounds. Hunter is the only player to record a double-double this season.

Also leading the Toreros' offensive efforts in double-digit scoring was Steph Gorman with 16 points, followed by Kiera Oakry and Erica Martinsen with 11 points each. Another key contributor on offense was Kasey Neubert with seven points. Collectively, the Toreros tallied 18 assists. 

On defense, San Diego collected 41 rebounds and 17 steals.  The Toreros also forced 28 turnovers on the Lions. Steph Gorman led the team in steals and set a new career high of eight. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Kendall Bird won the tip-off to give San Diego the first possession. 
  • Sydney Hunter scored the first two points on a layup from a pass from Jordyn Edwards
  • Hunter scored eight points in the first three minutes of the first quarter. 
  • The Toreros grabbed more offensive rebounds than the Lions, 7-1, in the second quarter.
  • San Diego had seven steals in the second quarter. 
  • Erica Martinsen hits a buzzer beater with one second left to close out the third quarter. 
  • Sydney Hunter scored five points in the fourth quarter to put her at 21 points. This is her second consecutive game scoring over 20 points.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sydney Hunter had her second consecutive double-double and fourth overall this season. She scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. 
  • Steph Gorman set a new career high in steals and recorded eight against LMU. Gorman beat her previous record of seven against LMU on February 8, 2021. 
  • Ayanna Khalfani tied her career high of seven rebounds. The last time she accomplished this was on February 7, 2021 against Pepperdine. 

LOOKING AHEAD
The Toreros will travel to Malibu, CA to play Pepperdine on Saturday, February 12 at 12 p.m. PT. San Diego holds a 39-46 record with a four game winning streak. Their last contest took place at home on February 15, 2021 and resulted in a 82-59 win under head coach Cindy Fisher
