Armas and Costello Key in Comeback Win Over Oregon

San Diego baseball beats Ducks by 5-4 margin for third straight win

SAN DIEGO — Behind an quality start from graduate student Ian Churchill, a spectacular defensive play from sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen, a big base hit from sophomore outfielder/first baseman Jack Costello, and a gritty at-bat from true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (Saint Augustine High School), San Diego baseball (3-0, 0-0 WCC) rallied for a 5-4 comeback win over Oregon (0-3, 0-0 Pac-12) at Fowler Park on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 965 for its third straight victory over the Ducks.

"It's a packed house, the environment here at Fowler Park has been unbelievable," USD head coach Brock Ungricht said after the game. "Credit to the fans for coming out to watch us play…it's great to have that."

TOREROS BATTLE BACK
  • After Oregon struck first with a run in the top half of the opening frame, sophomore Jack Costello put San Diego back on top with a sharp single through the left side that plated junior shortstop Cody Jefferis and Allen.
  • Redshirt sophomore Camden Vasquez sent a base hit to right field to score sophomore Kevin Sim, then Armas then shot yet another single back up the middle to make it 4-1 in favor of the Toreros.
  • Oregon tied it at four runs apiece in the game's later innings via a pair of home runs and a double before Armas drew a walk with a full count and the bases loaded to put USD up for good, 5-4.

CHURCHILL SOLID THROUGH SIX
  • Marking the third consecutive game in which a USD starter has gone at least five innings while surrendering three earned runs or less, Churchill tossed 6.1 innings while scattering eight hits, striking out five, and walking only one.
  • Redshirt sophomore Conner Thurman entered in relief of Churchill and worked his way out of a jam in the top of the seventh with a strikeout and a groundout.
  • Sophomore Ivran Romero tossed a perfect ninth, recording one strikeout to earn his first save of the season.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Costello led the way for the Toreros at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in a pair of runs as he notched his third consecutive multi-hit game in 2022.
  • Allen, who was 1-for 3 with two runs scored on Sunday after driving in three on Saturday night, had the defensive play of the game in center field, throwing out the Ducks' Jacob Walsh at home plate as he attempted to tag up in the top of the third inning, stopping Oregon's rally in its tracks.
  • Armas' standout performance, which included a making the tag at home plate on Allen's double play, a single, three RBIs and a go-ahead walk, came in what marked his first college game.
