Softball Defeats UC Riverside 5-2 to Close Out Blue & White Invitational

Toreros overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Highlanders

SAN DIEGO The Toreros (6-5) overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat UC Riverside (2-7), 5-2 to close out the Blue & White Invitational. In the contest prior, San Diego fell short to Oregon State (7-3) with a final score of 8-1. 

GAME 1 | USD 1, OSU 8
  • Courtney Rose started in the circle for the Toreros. 
  • In the top of the second, Courtney Rose struck out three batters in a row. 
  • Ashley Daugherty hit a triple to left center in the bottom of the second. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Madison Earnshaw strikes out her first batter of the game. 
  • Noelle Hee singles to left field in the bottom of the fourth.  
  • Ashley Daugherty drives in an RBI sending Faith Hernandez to score. San Diego trails 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth.  
  • Madison Earnshaw closed out the game with a strong performance in the circle totaling four strikeouts.

  • Courtney Rose struck out three batters against Oregon State. Rose is currently the leading pitcher with the most strikeouts this season totaling 24 so far.  
  • Ashley Daugherty hits her first triple of the 2022 season to left center.

  • In the top of the third, Sophia Bjerk fields a ground ball then steps on third and throws to first base to get the runner out for a double play. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Daugherty scores on a throwing error from the catcher and San Diego trails 2-1.
  • Joecellia Roberts earned two RBIs when she singled to center field and drove Mikalyn Emanuelli and Amanda Limon home to score. San Diego leads for the first time in the game, 3-2. 
  • Faith Hernandez continues San Diego's momentum at the plate and hits a double to left center to send Joecellia Roberts to score. The score is  4-2 at the bottom of the fifth.
  • Arisa Tovar singles to right center to earn her first RBI of the game and sends Faith Hernandez to score at the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Toreros closed out the fifth inning by scoring five runs to secure the lead, 5-2.
  • Courtney Rose pitched an outstanding game inside the circle finishing with only four hits across five innings pitched, seven strikeouts, and no errors. 

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sophia Bjerk made her first double play of the season against UC Riverside. This play marks the second overall double play for the Toreros in the 2022 season thus far. 
  • Courtney Rose struck out seven batters against UC Riverside. Rose continues to lead the Toreros in strikeouts with 31.
  • Joecellia Roberts earned two RBIs against UCR with her single to right field at the bottom of the fifth. In the 2022 season, Roberts has seven RBIs.
  • Joecellia Roberts and Noelle Hee are tied for the most RBIs on the Toreros with seven each.

The Toreros will host the Utah Utes on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 12 p.m. PT inside the USD Softball Complex. San Diego holds an all time record of 2-3 against Utah with their most recent contest on February 24, 2020 and resulted in a 0-8 loss.
