SAN DIEGO – In the final game of the regular season, San Francisco (23-8, 10-6 WCC) defeated the San Diego men's basketball team (14-15, 7-9 WCC), 78-62.
Senior
Marcellus Earlington compiled 15 points and five rebounds in the loss, shooting 6-of-11 from the field.
Senior
Jase Townsend also notched 15 points, making 7-of-15 attempts.
Junior
Yavuz Gultekin went into double figures for the eighth time this season, scoring 13 points to go along with six rebounds.
After being honored on Senior Day,
Vladimir Pinchuk led the Toreros with 10 rebounds in addition to scoring six points.
San Diego ends the regular season with a 14-15 (7-9 WCC) record, and will await its opponent for the WCC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a defensive battle early, with each team scoring two points through the first 4:06.
- San Francisco used a quick 8-0 run to go ahead 17-8 midway through the opening half.
- Earlington scored while getting fouled on back-to-back possessions, then drilled a triple to bring USD within five.
- The Dons made 10-of-12 field goals in a first half spurt to help extend their lead to eight.
- USD responded by not allowing a point over a span of 4:15, while an Earlington step back chopped the deficit to six.
- San Francisco hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, and led 38-28 after one.
- Townsend and Gultekin knocked down back-to-back triples to shrink the USF lead to seven.
- Shortly after, Townsend used a spin move for a tough bucket, getting USD within five at the 13:40 mark.
- With 9:37 left, San Diego trailed by five again after a Wayne McKinney layup. The Dons responded with a 14-7 run.
- San Francisco closed with game on a 6-0 run after making three straight shots.

- Earlington scored 10 straight points for USD and went into double figures with 8:09 left in the first half.
- Townsend went into double figures for the 12th time this season, which is third on the team.
