Women's Basketball Falls Short by 5 Points to Santa Clara; 89-84

The Toreros left it all on the court against the Broncos

SANTA CLARA —The Toreros gave it their all against the Santa Clara Broncos but came up short 89-84. 

Leading the Toreros' offensive efforts in double-digit scoring was Steph Gorman with 17 points followed by Sydney Hunter with 15. Steph Gorman shot 3-6 from the three-point line and shot 100% at the free throw line going 4-4. Sydney Hunter shot 6-8 from the field and 3-5 from the free throw line. Other key contributors on offense were Kiera Oakry with eight points followed by Ayanna Khalfani, Erica Martinsen, Kasey Neubert and Kylie Horstmeyer with six points each. Collectively, the Toreros tallied 18 assists. 

On defense, San Diego collected 31 rebounds, 15 steals, and four blocks. The Toreros also forced 20 turnovers on the Broncos. Kylie Horstmeyer set a career high with five steals and led the team in steals. Following Horstmeyer was Jordyn Edwards with three steals. Laura Erikstrup led the Toreoros in blocks with two  for the second consecutive game.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, San Diego grabbed eight rebounds.
  • The Toreros had six steals in the second quarter. Kylie Hortsmeyer led with two steals.
  • Steph Gorman hits two three-pointers to reduce the deficit and shift the momentum in the third quarter. 
  • In the fourth quarter, San Diego battled offensively with Kiera Oakry and Steph Gorman scoring seven points each. 
  • The Toreros scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, the highest number of points in a quarter during this game. 

LOOKING AHEAD
The Toreros will conclude their road trip in the Bay Area at Stockton, CA to play Pacific on Monday, February 7 at 5 p.m. PT. San Diego holds a 18-11 record against the Tigers with a two game losing streak.  Their last contest took place on February 22, 2021 and resulted in a 67-65 loss under head coach Cindy Fisher.
