SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (23-12, 9-6 WCC) completed a season sweep of local Division I competition in dominant fashion on Monday night, beating San Diego State (10-26, 4-14 Mountain West) 15-1 at Tony Gwynn Stadium for its third straight win over the Aztecs.
EARLY AND OFTEN
- San Diego got the scoring started in the top of the second with an eight-run inning, taking an early lead via:
- A bases-loaded hit by pitch from sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen
- A bases-loaded walk from sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth
- Sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) reaching on an error
- A sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School)
- An RBI double from sophomore utility player Jack Costello
- And junior shortstop Cody Jefferis reaching on a throwing error.
- Leading 8-0 after just two innings of play, San Diego added on in the following frame when Peraza singled to right field to drive in Allen, Sim notched another sacrifice fly to plate Meidroth, and graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro hammered his second home run of the season to deep right field to plate Peraza and make it 12-0.
- San Diego State got one back with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but the Toreros would have the final say after Sim ripped a single through the left side to bring in sophomore infielder Will Worthington in the seventh, true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio earned an RBI on an infield single in the eighth, and true freshman outfielder Casey Cummings notched his first career college RBI with a ground ball to third base in the top of the ninth.
KYSAR SHINES, BULLPEN BACKS HIM UP
- Redshirt sophomore right-hander Ryan Kysar started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in the best start of his young college career thus far, setting forth 5.0 innings while allowing just one run on three hits, walking only one, and striking out four en-route to receiving his first college win to move to 1-0.
- True freshman righty Morgan Lunceford, junior right-hander Jack Dolak (St. Augustine High School), sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy), and junior righty Jake Reed all teamed up for four innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen, allowing zero earned runs as Dolak led the way with a pair of strikeouts.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros' victory over SDSU came after taking both games this season versus UC San Diego in addition to their matchup with the Aztecs last week at Fowler Park.
- San Diego has now won each of its last three matchups with the Aztecs dating back to February of 2021.
- Teijeiro and Costello led the way for the Toreros at the plate with three hits apiece, followed by Peraza and true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School), who each had two.
- In total, ten different Toreros had a hit on Monday night, including pinch-hit knocks from Worthington and true freshman infielder Thomas Rollauer off the bench.
- Sim had a team-high three RBIs at Tony Gwynn Stadium, followed by Peraza, Teijeiro, and Costello, who all had two.
- In total, seven different Toreros drove in a run on Monday night.
- Meidroth, Peraza, Teijeiro, Costello, Jefferis, and Allen all came around to score two runs against the Aztecs, and nine total Toreros notched a run scored at SDSU.
- San Diego's 16 total hits marks a season high and is the 21st time USD has racked up 10 hits or more in 2022.
- USD's 15 runs scored also marks a season high and is the seventh time the Toreros have plated 10 runs or more.
- It's the most hits for USD since April 14 against Loyola Marymount (9-8 win in 14 innings) and the team's most runs scored since April 5 at UC San Diego (13-4 win).
