BYU Earns Sweep Over San Diego Softball

SAN DIEGO – After edging the University of San Diego softball team in game one, 7-4, BYU earned an 11-0 win in game two on Saturday to clinch a sweep.
 
Freshman Joecellia Roberts went 4-for-6 on the day with a home run and two RBI.
 
Redshirt junior Izzy Owen also went 4-for-6 on the day, including a run scored in game one.
 
The Toreros drop to 19-29 (4-4 WCC) on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game one, Braegelmann started off strong by striking out the side in the top of the first. Through three innings, she notched seven strikeouts.
  • San Diego led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles from Limon and Torculas. Owen bumped them over with a sacrifice bunt, and Hendrickson brought them home with a two-RBI single to center field.
  • BYU answered in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run. Later in the inning, the Cougars hit an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, BYU broke the tie with four runs.
  • San Diego cut the deficit in the bottom half of the fifth. After Izzy Owen led off with a single, Roberts brought her home with a blast to right field.
  • BYU got one back in the top of the sixth with an RBI double, taking a 7-4 lead. Ashley Daugherty walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but the next six USD batters were retired to end the game.
  • In game two, BYU took an early lead on a double steal. In the top of the third, the Cougars added five runs to make it 6-0.
  • Courtney Rose shut down BYU in the fourth and fifth innings, allowing just one walk.
  • BYU scored an additional five runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 11-0.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Owen led off with a single. San Diego later put runners on first and third with two outs, but popped up.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • San Diego totaled 16 hits on the day.
  • Roberts increased her batting average to .274 and hit her second home run of the season.
  • Owen is now batting .300 on the season (27-for-90).
  • Madison Earnshaw pitched two relief innings in game one, allowing just one hit and no earned runs.
UP NEXT
San Diego will host LMU next weekend for the last home series of the regular season.
