Toreros battle but fall short

San Diego — Loyola Marymount University swept a West Coast Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday over the Toreros by scores of 7-0 and 5-1 at the USD Softball Complex.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • LMU scored in every inning from the third on.
    • In the third inning, LMU got a single then stole second base.  A fly out to right allowed the runner to third and she scored when a walk turned into a wild pitch.
    • An inning later, with runners on first and third and two outs, the Lions doubled to right to bring in two runs.
    • The fifth inning saw LMU score on a RBI single to right.
    • In the sixth, it was another RBI double down the left field line.
    • The final frame saw the Lions score two on a single back up through the middle of the diamond.
  • USD threatened in the seventh, but ultimately came up short.
TORERO NOTES:
  • Madison Earnshaw started the game for the Toreros, her 13th start of the season.
  • Courtney Rose came in the fifth inning and got the Toreros out of a jam with bases loaded.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the first, LMU put a run up on an RBI double to left center field.
  • USD came right back with a triple to leadoff the game from Alexia Torculas to right field.  She was knocked in when Izzy Owen followed her up with a single through the right side.
  • LMU saw Alyssa Daniell hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season.
  • The Lions scored three runs in the top of the seventh.
TORERO NOTES:
  • Torculas and Owen accounted for four of the Toreros five hits in game two.
  • McKenna Braegelmann got the start in game two allowing just one run in two innings.
  • Courtney Rose came in to close the game out.
The Toreros and Lions will close out the series on Sunday, May 1 at High Noon.  It will also be USD's Senior day where they will honor their accomplishments to the USD program.
