LAST TIME OUT
TUESDAY: The Toreros dropped a tough 8-7 decision at Cal State Fullerton last time out despite leading for five innings.

• San Diego struck first with five runs in the second and added on with another two in the third, but the Titans proceeded to score four unanswered runs to tie the contest, doing so with two in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh before scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI infield single to first base.

• Four San Diego players (Meidroth, Jefferis, Vasquez, and Allen) notched two hits on Tuesday night, and Allen led the way for the Toreros with three runs batted in, a double, and a run scored.

• Jack Costello had two RBIs, and Ricketts and Peraza each drove in a single run.

• Righty James Sashin made his first career start and surrendered three runs across two frames, and right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School) tossed a scoreless third inning out of the bullpen, working around a hit with a single strikeout.

LAST WEEKEND: The Toreros took two of three from BYU at Miller Park from April 21-23, bouncing back after an 11-7 defeat on Thursday night for 8-3 and 4-3 wins on Friday and Saturday to take the series.

• USD's game one loss came despite scoring first and plating a trio of runs in the top of the ninth inning.

• Every player in the San Diego lineup notched a hit in game two as it put up five runs in the top of the second and three in the seventh, and Ivran Romero, Kyle Carr, and Ian Churchill teamed up for a strong collective effort on the mound.

• Reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week Brycen Mautz made his first start in a series finale on Saturday and turned in a solid outing, throwing six strong frames while scattering 10 hits.

• Chase Meidroth hammered a late-game homer as part of three total RBIs on the day and Ryan Kysar set forth a gutsy performance on the mound to close it out, securing the 4-3 victory by inducing a game-ending double play in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second base.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS SANTA CLARA
• The Toreros are 70-62 against the Broncos all-time and are 6-4 in their last 10 games against them, with the two programs' most recent meeting coming last April, a San Diego sweep at Stephen Schott Stadium.

• USD beat SCU by scores of 2-1, 9-4, and 6-4 to secure the series.

• San Diego last played Santa Clara at Fowler Park in March of 2018, a series that saw the Toreros take one game out of three.

• The Broncos beat USD 13-2 in game one then the Toreros rallied for an 8-2 win in game two before falling by a 16-7 margin in the series finale.

• San Diego is 3-6 versus Santa Clara at Fowler Park since the venue opened in 2013.

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
FRIDAY: Redshirt sophomore right-hander Ryan Kysar is set to make his first career Friday night start in game one in what will mark his 10th college appearance (sixth start).

• Kysar, who redshirted for his freshman year at Arizona before transferring to USD, most recently pitched last Saturday in the Toreros' series finale at BYU.

• The Valencia, California native entered in the bottom of the seventh and turned in three gutsy innings, surrendering a run on four hits with two strikeouts but stranding both the tying and winning runs on the basepaths in the bottom of the ninth when he induced a game-ending double play to earn his first career save and secure San Diego the 4-3 victory.

• Kysar's last start came on April 18 at San Diego State in what marked his most dominant start yet: 5.0 innings while surrendering just one run on three hits alongside a single walk and four strikeouts en-route to his first college win.

• For the season Kysar is 1-0 with a 4.65 ERA with 29 strikeouts to his credit against 13 walks.

SATURDAY: Sophomore lefty Brycen Mautz is slated to take the mound for San Diego in Saturday's nationally televised matchup in what will mark his team-high 11th start of 2022.

• Mautz last appeared in last Saturday's series finale at BYU, throwing six strong frames while scattering 10 hits and allowing just two runs, striking out three batters against a single walk enroute to his team-best seventh win of 2022.

•The San Diego, California native has posted a team-best 7-1 record and 3.41 ERA so far this season in a team-high 63.1 innings pitched against just 14 walks and leads the WCC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.36), ranks fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.65), and second in total strikeouts (89), categories in which he's 29, 29, and 9th in the country, respectively.

• He is one of four WCC pitchers to turn in a complete game, has tossed at least five innings in each of his 10 starts so far this season, and has surrendered three runs or less in seven of those 10 outings.

• Mautz, who attended nearby Westview High School, went 3-1 with a 4.67 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched last year, including five perfect frames and nine Ks against UC Riverside in mid March.

• He was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week on April 18.

SUNDAY: Redshirt sophomore lefty Kyle Carr will make his fourth career start on Sunday in the series finale in what marks his fifth appearance of 2022.

• Carr, who made his college debut earlier this year after missing all of the 2021 season and the first 11 games of 2022 due to injuries, last pitched in the Toreros' middle game (Friday, April 22) at BYU, throwing 2.1 innings out of the bullpen while allowing a run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

•The San Marcos, California native (San Marcos High School) is 1-0 with a 6.14 ERA in 7.1 total innings pitched so far this year with 11 strikeouts under his belt against three walks.

• In February, he was selected as the Perfect Game WCC Preseason Freshman of the Year.

• San Diego's .381 on-base percentage also leads the WCC, and its .414 slugging percentage is just behind BYU's conference-high mark of .425.

MEIDROTH LEADS THE WAY
•Sophomore Chase Meidroth continued to anchor the top of the San Diego lineup last week, going 7-for-18 (.388) with four runs scored, three runs batted in, three doubles, a walk, a home run, and a stolen base across three games at BYU and one at Cal State Fullerton.

• The infielder was 1-for-5 with a run scored and a double in game one in Provo, was 1-for-4 with another run scored, a walk, and a double in game two, and erupted for a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored, three RBIs, and a crucial late-game two-run homer that proved to be the difference in a series finale at Miller Park that was decided by just one run.

• He added on with a 2-for-4 evening on Tuesday at Goodwin Field that saw him rip a double, come across to score a run, and draw a walk as he extended his hit streak to six games.

•Meidroth, who was selected to the 2021 Northwoods League All-Star Game last summer, is batting .344 (53-for-154) with 30 runs scored, 11 doubles, five home runs, 28 RBIs, and a tied-for-team-leading 27 walks so far in 2022.

SIM STILL RAKING
•Sophomore infielder Kevin Sim has put together a strong start to the 2022 season, batting .327 (49-for-150) through all 39 of the Toreros' games thus far with a team and conference-high 10 home runs along with a team-high 38 runs batted in that ranks second in the WCC.

•The San Diego, California native (Torrey Pines High School) kept things rolling last week against BYU and CSUF, notching hits in three of the Toreros' four games as he came around to score four runs, drive in a run, double twice, and walk twice. His big week included his 12th and 13th multi-hit games of the season as he recorded two hits in each of his first two games in Provo.

• Sim, who was named the WCC Player of the Week on March 14, leads both San Diego and the West Coast Conference with a .587 slugging percentage, and his .429 on-base percentage is second among qualified USD batters.

CONSISTENCY FROM COSTELLO
• Sophomore utility player Jack Costello has picked up right where he left off this season after a dynamic college debut a year ago, hitting safely in all but seven of the Toreros' 39 games so far in 2022.

•Costello, who has hit safely in 64 of the 82 games he has played in so far at USD and has reached base in 37 of the Toreros' 39 games in 2022, was 5-for-17 (.294) across three contests at BYU and one at Cal State Fullerton, driving in five runs as he came around to score twice, doubled, and walked once.

•The Simi Valley, California native went 2-for-4 with a three-RBI, bases-clearing double in game one against the Cougars, scored two runs and walked as part of a 1-for-4 night in game two, and was 1-for-4 on Saturday in the series finale before he extended his hit streak with a single and two RBIs at Goodwin Field on Tuesday night.

•Since going hitless in his first two college appearances on February 21 and 27, 2021, he's been hitless just 16 times, and 32 of his 81 college games so far have resulted in a multi-hit performance, including 15 multi-hit games out of 39 total contests so far in 2022, a mark that's two games off the team lead (Chase Meidroth, 17).

• Costello, who was named a Freshman All-American (2021), an All-WCC Freshman Team  member, an All-WCC Honorable Mention (2021), and a 2022 All-WCC Preseason Team selection, is batting .315 (51-for-162) so far this season with a tied-for-team-high 11 doubles, three home runs, 27 RBIs, and 71 total bases.

PERAZA HEATING UP IN RETURN FROM INJURY
•Sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) has swung a hot bat as of late, notching hits in all three of San Diego's games at BYU over the weekend before adding an RBI sac fly on Tuesday at CSUF.

• The Chula Vista, California native, who missed 20 games from March 8 to April 9 before making his return on April 12 versus San Diego State, was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks in game one at Miller Park, was 1-for-4 with two RBIs on Friday, and was 2-for-5 with an RBI in the series finale on Saturday.

• Allen, who has started each of the team's first 39 games in center field, owns USD's third-longest hit streak so far this season (nine games) and pushed San Diego to a walk-off win on April 14 against LMU with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the 14th inning.

TEIJEIRO TAKES CONTROL
• Graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro stayed hot last week against BYU, going 4-for-11 (.363) with a pair of walks and a double in Provo as he compiled two hits in each of the Toreros' first two games against the Cougars.

• USD leads the conference and ranks 24th in the nation with a .978 fielding percentage through its 39 total games so far in 2022.

FOWLER MAGIC
• San Diego's five total walk-off wins (March 4 vs. Dallas Baptist, March 22 vs. UC Irvine, March 25 vs. Saint Mary's, and April 14 and 15 vs. Loyola Marymount) so far this season has already surpassed the team's remarkable walk-off total from 2021 (4).
