SAN DIEGO — Seven different Toreros notched a hit and junior catcher
Caleb Ricketts launched his 11th home run of 2022, but San Diego baseball (31-17, 16-9 WCC) dropped game one of its weekend series against Gonzaga (33-14, 19-6) by an 8-4 margin at Fowler Park on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Gonzaga struck first in the top of the opening frame with an RBI single, sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) ripped a standup, two-RBI triple off the top of the left-center field wall to plate both sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth to give San Diego a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
- The Bulldogs tied it at two runs apiece with a two-run homer over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth, then added on with three runs in the top of the sixth with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a passed ball, and an RBI single that made it 6-2 Zags.
- USD battled back in the bottom of the sixth with an opposite field solo shot from Ricketts and an RBI sacrifice fly from Jefferis that brought home sophomore utility player Jack Costello (who had tripled to center field) to make it 6-4 but would get no closer, suffering an 8-4 defeat after the Zags plated a pair in the top of the ninth with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Sophomore lefty Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in 5.1 innings while walking none and striking out eight.
- Graduate lefty Ian Churchill struck out three in 3.1 innings of relief.
- Sim led the way for USD with two runs batted in, and Meidroth, Peraza, Ricketts, and Costello all scored a single run.
- Peraza, graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro, and sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen all drew a walk on Friday night.
