SAN DIEGO – After a securing a WCC home weekend sweep, the San Diego women's basketball program (8-7, 2-2 WCC) heads out for a three-game road stint, that begins at 2022 NCAA tournament qualifier BYU (7-8, 2-2 WCC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT, in Provo, Utah.
LAST TIME OUT
- San Diego delivered their strongest offensive performance of the season, defeating Pacific, 84-74, on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
- The Toreros finished with season-highs in points, field goals and assists and had their largest first half scoring output of the season at 41 points.
- Kiera Oakry led all scorers with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while Laura Erikstrup and Jess Finney each went into double figures in the victory.
OPPONENT HISTORY
- San Diego trails 8-17 in the all-time series to the Cougars and are searching for their first win in Provo since a 66-60 win on Feb. 17, 2018.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Veronica Sheffey enters her first action after being named the WCC's Freshman of the Week on Jan. 2. Sheffey was a critical part of the 2-0 weekend for the Toreros, averaging 11.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game and scoring a career-high 17 points in the win over Saint Mary's.
- Erikstrup has found her rhythm on the boards as of late, averaging 7.0 rebounds per game over her last seven games.
- The Toreros continue to turn defense into offense, as they rank third in the WCC in turnovers forced per game (16.67) and fourth in scoring defense (63.0).
- The Toreros also lead the WCC in offensive rebounds per game (14.5) which ranks 40th in the nation and rank 76th in the nation in rebounding margin (5.4).
- San Diego is hoping to jump out to an early lead, where they tend to have the most success. San Diego is 7-2 when leading or tied at halftime, while 1-5 when they trail. The team broke their 0-5 mark when they trail with a 16-point comeback victory over Saint Mary's on Dec. 29.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Oakry has been adept at drawing contact all season and has gotten to the free throw line frequently, ranking second in the WCC and in the top-100 nationally in free throws made (56) and attempts (68).
- Myah Pace is closing in on several milestones in her highly successful Torero career, sitting just 18 points away from 1,000 and 28 steals away from 250 in her career.
- In addition, Pace ranks fourth all-time in career steals with 222 and needs 18 to match Amanda Rego (240) for third place.
- Pace is also tenth all-time in assists at 325 and is two away from passing Angie Straub (326) for ninth and moving into a tie for eighth with Amy Kame at 327.
