Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls at No. 12 Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Diego men's soccer program (8-4-2, 2-1-0 WCC) were unable to recover from an early deficit, falling 5-1 to No. 12 Portland (9-3-0, 2-1-0 WCC) on Saturday night at Merlo Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego fell into an early hole on the night, as Portland took the lead in the 5th minute.
  • In what proved to be a physical and sloppy game on a rainy night in Portland, the Toreros found their progress stifled by fouls, yellow cards and other factors throughout the evening.
  • Portland emerged with a 2-0 lead at halftime, but the Toreros made a push in the second half.
  • Ross Johnstone collected the ball in the Portland end and fed Samy Kanaan, who set up Owen Wiebe for his first goal of the season, to cut the lead to one in the 56th minute.
  • However, the Pilots struck just minutes later for a goal in the 65th minute to regain the advantage for good.
  • Ultimately, the Pilots added two more goals, while the Toreros struggled to generate any late momentum.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Wiebe has now scored in back-to-back games against the Pilots.
  • Kanaan recorded his first career assist in the loss.
