MORAGA, Calif. — A match-high 11 kills from freshman
Nemo Beach on Saturday afternoon helped San Diego (12-9, 8-3 WCC)Â cruise past Saint Mary's (12-11, 6-5 WCC)Â in Moraga, earning the Toreros their eighth sweep of the season as West Coast Conference play continued at the UCU Pavilion.
USD beat the Gaels by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-19 again as it prevailed in straight sets for the seventh time in 11 WCC matches. Beach's big performance helped San Diego out-hit Saint Mary's .298 to .132.
Haylee Stoner paced the USD defense with a match-high six block assists.
First Set - San Diego, 25-16
- The Toreros began Saturday afternoon's first set strong, kicking off the match with a 3-1 run that was powered by a kill from Kylie Pries and a Saint Mary's attack and service error.
- USD stretched its lead to six as the set progressed, doing on on a service ace from Madi Allen.
- Amber Stivrins made it a seven-point lead down the stretch with a service ace of her own, then Nemo Beach hammered a kill to make it 18-10 in her team's favor and force a timeout from the Gaels.
- Stivrins found her mark on back-to-back points to end the frame, earning her team a 25-16 victory as it pulled ahead 1-0 in the match.
Second Set - San Diego, 25-19
- USD trailed early on in the second set but created a 5-4 lead when Pries notched a well-timed kill.
- Key service aces from Tercariol and Bennett helped San Diego expand that advantage, the latter of which making it 22-14 in the Toreros' favor.
- SMC was back within four at 22-18 but got no closer, dropping a 25-19 decision to USD after Beach closed things out with a kill to put her team up 2-0 in the match.
Third Set - San Diego, 25-19
- Saturday afternoon's third and final set saw the Gaels and Toreros tied at 7-7 before Alex Hoglund checked in and delivered a pair of clutch service aces to help create an 11-7 San Diego lead.
- Pries delivered a service ace of her own to make it 20-15 in USD's favor, then a combo block from Stoner and Tercariol kept the Toreros in front by a 23-18 margin.
- Leyla Blackwell hammered back-to-back kills to end the match, earning her team a 25-19 win in the frame as it took down Saint Mary's in straight sets.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Beach hit .333 as she led her team in kills for a second consecutive match.
- Pries was just behind with nine kills while hitting .368.
- Stoner's team-high six blocks were complemented by eight kills that she achieved by hitting a team-high .400.
- Tercariol put together a balanced performance, racking up a match-high 29 assists while adding eight digs, four blocks, two kills, and a service ace.
- Hoglund led USD with two total service aces.
- Bennett tallied a team-high 11 digs and chipped in three assists and a service ace.
