MALIBU, Calif. — Haylee Stoner shined on both sides of the ball but San Diego volleyball (15-10, 11-4 WCC) could not overcome Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon, dropping a tough 3-0 decision to the Waves (17-6, 13-0 WCC) at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
Pepperdine prevailed by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-17 to take the match in straight sets.
Stoner hit a team-high .583 as she added seven kills and a service ace and tied the game-high with six total blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - Pepperdine, 25-19
- USD held a 14-11 lead over Pepperdine to begin the match before the Waves scored four straight points to pull ahead.
- A kill from Leyla Blackwell tied the score at 18-18, but the deadlock was short-lived.
- The Waves closed the frame on a 7-1 run to pull ahead 1-0 in the match.
Second Set - Pepperdine, 25-22
- San Diego stayed close with Pepperdine as Saturday afternoon's second set got started, resulting in a 5-5 tie early on.
- A Pepperdine attack error kept USD within one of the Waves as the set neared its midpoint, moving the score to 13-12 in the home team's favor.
- Nemo Beach notched a kill late in the frame to get the Toreros within two at 22-20 but they got no closer.
Third Set - Pepperdine, 25-17
- USD fell behind early in Saturday's third and final frame, but fought back with key service aces from Olivia Bennett and Stoner.
- San Diego struggled to find its mark on offense down the stretch, gifting the Waves a series of points on attack errors.
- A service ace from Pepperdine eventually finished it, the final score in the frame 25-17.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Amber Stivrins led USD with nine kills on Saturday afternoon.
- Kylie Pries, Blackwell, and Beach all joined Stoner in recording multiple block assists.
- Isadaora Tercariol had a team-high 21 assists, and was tied with Anna Jaworowski for the team high in digs (seven).
- Stivrins, Stoner, and Bennett all had a single service ace.
