Volleyball Set to Host Gonzaga for Senior Day

Toreros will wrap up 2023 regular-season schedule on Saturday against Bulldogs at JCP

SAN DIEGO — San Diego volleyball (15-10, 11-4 WCC) is set to conclude its 2023 regular-season schedule on Saturday afternoon by hosting Gonzaga (3-23, 0-15 WCC) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 12:00 p.m. The matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Braden Surprenant on the call. Live statistics will be available on USDToreros.com.

Saturday marks USD's Senior Day, with five graduating players — Leyla Blackwell, Alex Hoglund, Kylie Pries, Amber Stivrins, and Isadora Tercariol — scheduled to be honored in a pregame ceremony.

LAST TIME OUT - USD SWEEPS SAN FRANCISCO, IS SWEPT BY PEPPERDINE
• San Diego split its matches last week, taking down the Dons in straight sets at the JCP on Thursday before traveling to Malibu and suffering a 3-0 loss to the Waves.

Thursday, November 9 - San Diego 3, San Francisco 0 (Jenny Craig Pavilion)
• Four Toreros hit .417 or better last Thursday evening as San Diego earned a West Coast Conference sweep over San Francisco at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

• The Toreros took the first set 25-18, won the second 25-19 and closed the match with a 25-20 set win for its fourth consecutive victory and third sweep in the last four matches. 

• Freshman outside hitter Nemo Beach led the match with 13 kills and helped the Toreros out hit the Dons .329 to .110. San Diego out-killed San Francisco 40-27.  

Saturday, November 11 - Pepperdine 3, San Diego 0 (Firestone Fieldhouse)
Haylee Stoner shined on both sides of the ball but San Diego could not overcome Pepperdine last Saturday afternoon, dropping a tough 3-0 decision to the Waves at the Firestone Fieldhouse.

• Pepperdine prevailed by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-17 to take the match in straight sets.

• Stoner hit a team-high .583 as she added seven kills and a service ace and tied the game-high with six total blocks.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST GONZAGA
• The Toreros are 62-9 (.873) against the Bulldogs all-time, with the two programs' most recent meeting coming earlier this season on September 28, a quick 3-0 USD sweep in Spokane.

Amber Stivrins recorded her 1,000th career kill that afternoon at Charlotte Y. Martin Centre, which saw the Toreros prevail by scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-10.

• The graduate transfer totaled 13 kills while hitting at a robust .600 clip. Haylee Stoner matched Stivrins' hitting percentage that afternoon while also leading all players with six block assists.

• San Diego out-hit the Bulldogs .476 to .033 and out-blocked the Zags 9-2 back in September.

• USD has won 56 straight matches against Gonzaga dating back to 1994 and is 31-4 all-time at home versus the Zags.

• San Diego last lost a home match to Gonzaga on October 5, 1991— a 3-0 Bulldogs sweep in USD's Sports Center.

ONE LAST COLLEGE GAME
• Graduating San Diego players Leyla Blackwell, Alex Hoglund, Kylie Pries, Amber Stivrins, and Isadora Terçariol are set to be honored prior to Saturday afternoon's game. Below is a look at their respective Torero careers.

Leyla Blackwell
• A San Diego native, middle blocker Leyla Blackwell joined the Toreros as a transfer from Indiana in 2021 and has dominated the WCC ever since, racking up a remarkable 419 blocks and 558 kills across nearly 90 matches.

• She played a key role in the Toreros' historic run to the Final Four last year, earning her second consecutive All-WCC First Team selection alongside an All-America Honorable Mention and a Pacific South All-Region Honorable Mention.

• Blackwell  has been named to the WCC Preseason Team twice and is a seven-time WCC Defensive Player of the Week.

• She is set to graduate with a degree in Political Science.

Alex Hoglund
• Setter Alex Hoglund joined the Toreros as a freshman in 2020 and made an immediate impact as a clutch and fearless player.

• She served five consecutive times in the 2022 Elite Eight at Maples Pavilion, keying off a stunning fifth-set San Diego scoring run that pushed the Toreros past Stanford and into their first ever NCAA Final Four.

• Across four college seasons Alex has recorded 186 assists, 121 digs, and 30 service aces across 88 matches.

• She is set to graduate with a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience.

Kylie Pries
• Outside hitter Kylie Pries joined the Toreros as a freshman in 2020 and quickly established herself as a talented and well-rounded player.

• Across 91 college matches she has recorded 392 kills, 297 digs,103 blocks, 67 service aces, and 31 assists.

• Pries has helped the Toreros to three NCAA Tournament appearances in her career, including the team's trip to the Final Four last year. She earned a All-WCC Honorable Mention as a junior in 2021 and is a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Week.

• Kylie is set to graduate with a degree in Communications.

Amber Stivrins
• Outside hitter Amber Stivrins joined the Toreros this year as a graduate transfer from Georgia and quickly became one of USD's most fearsome offensive players.

• Across 25 matches this fall she has recorded a team-high 283 kills, 27 blocks, and a tied-for-team-high 29 service aces. And in five college seasons and three programs Amber has totaled 1,151 kills, 482 digs, 120 blocks, and 115 service aces.

• She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance and is set to earn a graduate certificate in Leadership Studies from USD.

Isadora Terçariol
• Setter Isadora Terçariol joined the Toreros as a transfer from Brazil in 2020 and has been a valuable contributor to the program ever since, totaling 1,763 assists, 406 digs, 102 blocks, and 41 service aces as USD made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

• She has emerged as one of the WCC's top setters in 2023, with her 10.08 assists per set ranking second in the league alongside her first-ever WCC Offensive Player of the Week selection back in October.

• Isadora is set to graduate with degrees in Psychology and Sociology.

A HELPING HAND
• After not seeing any game action last season, Isadora Terçariol has emerged as the WCC's top setter in 2023, averaging 10.21  assists per set through 24 matches that ranks 46th nationally.

• A native of Säo Paulo, Brazil, Terçariol joined the Toreros as a transfer before the pandemic-modified Spring 2021 season.

• She has since totaled 1,786 assists in a San Diego uniform, including a team-high 745 in 2023.

• The 1,500th assist of her career came in USD's 3-0 sweep of Pacific at the JCP on October 7.

• Terçariol was named WCC Offensive Player of the Week on October 9, making her the first San Diego setter to earn the honor since first-team All-American Gabby Blossom was selected on November 7, 2022.

LEYLA BLOCKS WELL
• San Diego native and La Jolla High School alum Leyla Blackwell ranks 24th nationally with an average of 1.31 blocks per set.

• Her 115 total blocks through 25 matches in 2023 are the most on the USD roster and rank second in the WCC.

• Blackwell has been named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week seven times in her career, including twice this season.

MILESTONE WATCH
• Leyla Blackwell notched her 450th career block last Thursday at LMU and is now just 15 away from reaching 500 in her career. She is also just 60.5 career points away from 1,000.

• Madi Allen, who has started the season with 15 consecutive games with at least 10 digs, earned her 1,000th career dig on October 14 at San Francisco. She is also just one ace away from notching her 100th during her collegiate career.

• Isadora Terçariol reached 1,500 assists on October 7 against Pacific. She now has 1,807 across three college seasons.
