Beach Leads San Diego Sweep of San Francisco

Freshman outside hitter tallies match-high 13 kills on Thursday night in 3-0 win over Dons at JCP

SAN DIEGO — Four Toreros hit .417 or better on Thursday evening as San Diego volleyball (15-9, 10-3 WCC) earned a West Coast Conference sweep over San Francisco (10-15, 4-9 WCC) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros took the first set 25-18, won the second 25-19 and closed the match with a 25-20 set win for its fourth consecutive victory and third sweep in the last four matches. 

Freshman outside hitter Nemo Beach led the match with 13 kills and helped the Toreros out hit the Dons .329 to .110. San Diego out-killed San Francisco 40-27.  

USD has now won six of its last eight WCC matches of 2023 and has prevailed in straight sets 10 times this season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - San Diego, 25-18
  • The Toreros got four consecutive points, highlighted by a Haylee Stoner ace to give the home team an 8-4 lead early, which forced a Dons timeout. 
  • After the set was tied at 11 apiece, San Diego went on a 10-3 run that was fueled by four kills from Stivrins as well as a block from Kylie Pries and Stoner. 
  • USD outhit USF .355 to .121 in the first set and outscored the Dons 14-9.
  • Leyla Blackwell and Stivrins both recorded four kills in the opening set as the senior middle blocker Leyla Blackwell went a perfect 4-for-4 on her attacks in the opening frame. 
Second Set - San Diego, 25-19
  • The Toreros and Dons were trading points through the midway point of the second set until USD put up six straight points to take a 18-12 lead, courtesy of two Dons attack errors, two service aces by Pries and two Stivrins kills. 
  • San Diego ultimately went on a 12-1 run before calling a timeout after allowing the Dons to score four consecutive points.
  • USD closed the set by taking two of the final three points, thanks to a couple of kills from Beach. 
  • The Toreros once again outhit the Dons in the second set, this time edging the visiting team, .231 to -.038. 
Third Set - San Diego, 25-20
  • The Dons scored the first three points to open the third set before the Toreros eventually tied the set and took its first lead of the set at 10-9 on back-to-back service aces by Pries.  
  • Those two aces by Pries were part of a 6-0 run by the Toreros that created a 11-9 USD lead and forced a Dons timeout. 
  • USF tied the set at 11 apiece and took the lead again on three straight points with a service ace to make it 12-11. 
  • The Toreros were unable to regain the lead until they got a kill from Blackwell to take a 19-18 lead. 
  • USD got back-to-back kills from Beach to take a 22-20 lead, forcing a Dons timeout as the Toreros pulled within three points of a sweep.
  • Kills from Beach and Stoner then brought things to match point at 24-20.
  • Securing the sweep was a kill from Beach, her 13th of the night, which was a game-high.  
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Thursday night marked the fourth time Beach has recorded double-digit kills in her last five games.
  • Stivrins was just behind beach with 11 kills of her own while hitting .269.
  • Overall, San Diego volleyball outhit USF .329 to .110.
  • Leyla Blackwell recorded a .556 hitting percentage, Beach hit .440 and Pries hit .417. 
  • Pries, who recorded six kills, also had match-high six service aces and a block assist.  
  • In addition to her 11 kills on a team-high 26 attacks, Stivrins recorded a match-high three block assists.
  • Isadora Tercariol recorded 32 assists and a kill alongside seven digs. 
  • Olivia Bennett and Madi Allen each recorded nine digs to lead the match in the three-set win.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday (November 11) afternoon when they continue WCC play on the road against Pepperdine in what will mark their final road match of the season. First serve at the Firestone Fieldhouse is set for 12:00 p.m.
