Softball Earns Doubleheader Split at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The San Diego softball program (1-6, 0-0 WCC) battled through two, low-scoring affairs to earn a split of a doubleheader at Long Beach State (3-4, 0-0 Big West) on Wednesday afternoon at the LBSU Softball Complex.

The Toreros dropped a tight 1-0 decision in game one, but rallied to earn a 3-2 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE – SAN DIEGO 0, LONG BEACH STATE 1
  • While both teams were able to find scoring opportunities throughout the evening, both starting pitchers stood strong the entire game.
  • Madison Earnshaw earned the start for the Toreros and was brilliant, going a complete six innings and allowing just one earned run.
  • The Toreros would attempt to give her run support on several occasions, as Izzy Owen led the way with a big day, notching a 3-for-3 performance, with two doubles and a walk.
  • San Diego would have their first scoring chance in the second inning, when Taylor Johnson and Joecellia Roberts each singled to set up Mikalyn Emanuelli.
  • Emanuelli came through with a single up the middle, but Johnson was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end the frame.
  • In the third, Owen opened the inning with a double, but the run would be stranded at third base.
  • In the fifth inning, the Toreros got runners on second and third base with one out, but were thrown out at home again in a run down.
  • Owen's third hit of the game, followed by an Amanda Limon single, gave the Toreros one more chance in the seventh inning, but the Beach were able to get out of the jam one last time.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO – SAN DIEGO 3, LONG BEACH STATE 2
  • San Diego's offensive fortune changed almost immediately in game two, as EJ Joyner reached on an error to set up Roberts.
  • Roberts quickly doubled off the center field wall, driving in Joyner and giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, Owen reached on a bunt single and Joyner also reached on an error to set up Roberts a second time.
  • The sophomore drove home Owen with a sacrifice fly and extended the lead to 2-0.
  • Joyner would create a much-needed cushion in the fifth inning with her first collegiate home run, launched over the left center field wall to make it 3-0.
  • While the Toreros found their offense, Kelsey Tadlock continued to cruise in the circle.
  • The freshman powered through five and a third scoreless innings, before the Beach tallied two runs in the sixth inning.
  • Nevertheless, Tadlock rallied to lock down a complete game victory for the Toreros.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Owen increased her batting average to .500, with her second, three-hit game of the season. The redshirt senior had three such games in 2022.
  • Tadlock has opened her collegiate career with three consecutive complete games and earned her first win tonight.
  • Johnson matched last season's single season leader in hit-by-pitches with her sixth in seven games.
  • San Diego won its first game in Long Beach, after exclusively winning in San Diego during the 19-game all-time series.
