DeCriscio Homers in Tough Loss to Tigers

San Diego can't hang on for sweep of Pacific, falls 5-2 at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (8-9-1, 2-1 WCC) struck first for an early lead but could not hang on for the sweep of Pacific (7-10, 1-2 WCC) on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-2 to the Tigers at Fowler Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graduate transfer infielder James Arakawa (Pacific) got the Toreros on the board in the bottom of the first when he plated junior infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) with an RBI grounder.
  • Two innings later, sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio doubled the San Diego advantage by ripping his first career college home run, sending the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the third over the left field wall for a solo shot that pushed USD's lead to 2-0.
  • Pacific proceeded to score two runs in the top of the fourth (an RBI single and an RBI fielder's choice) and three more in the top of the sixth (a two-RBI triple and a sacrifice fly) to create a 5-2 advantage that San Diego could not overcome.
ON THE MOUND
  • Redshirt sophomore righty Ryan Kysar began Sunday's game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in 3.1 innings while allowing two earned runs on seven hits, walking none, and striking out five.
  • Junior right-hander Ivran Romero was first out of the pen in relief of Kysar and tossed 2.2 frames while surrendering three runs (one earned) on two hits, walking none as he recorded four strikeouts.
  • Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson followed as he appeared for the second consecutive game and set forth two scoreless innings, working around a single walk with two strikeouts.
  • Sophomore left-hander/outfielder Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game for the Toreros.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sim (2-for-5, run scored), Smith (2-for-4) and Peraza (2-for-4) all had two hits on Sunday.
  • Junior infielder Will Worthington was 1-for-4 with a double and DeCriscio was 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and his first college home run.
  • After walking a game-high four times on Saturday night, freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch led Sunday's game with two walks.
  • The Toreros took two of three from Pacific after winning 9-3 on Friday and 16-9 on Saturday.
