Women’s Basketball Powers Past UC Irvine Into WNIT Super 16

SAN DIEGO – Behind sensational defense, the San Diego women's basketball program (19-13, 11-7 WCC) advanced to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) Super 16, defeating UC Irvine (25-7, 16-2 Big West), 58-48, on Monday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Kylie Horstmeyer led all Torero scorers with 15 points and five rebounds, while Kasey Neubert added nine points and 17 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • From the start of the game, the Toreros were active on the defensive end of the ball and hounded the Anteaters.
  • UC Irvine finished with just eight points apiece in the first and second quarters and were held to just 19.4 percent shooting.
  • Meanwhile, Kiera Oakry started quickly for the Toreros offense, with five points in the opening quarter.
  • After nearly six minutes without a basket for both teams in the second quarter, Myah Pace hit a key three pointer to extend the lead to 10 points.
  • After a free throw by the Anteaters cut the lead to five, Horstmeyer hit an improbable half court buzzer beater to spark the Toreros into halftime up 24-16.
  • Both teams came out hot in the third quarter, shooting over 50 percent each.
  • Horstmeyer scored six points in the period and helped San Diego extend the lead to as high as 14.
  • The Toreros opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run and never looked back, taking a 16-point lead.
  • A layup by Horstmeyer was the last field goal by the Toreros at 6:52 left in the game, as the team locked down the Anteaters offense and added several free throws to secure the victory.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • The Toreros have advanced to the WNIT Super 16 for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2016.
  • With four free throws in the game, Kiera Oakry moved into a tie for tenth on the Toreros all-time free throw list, matching Morgan Henderson.
  • San Diego held UC Irvine under 30 percent shooting in the game, accomplishing the threshold for the second time this season.
  • The Toreros finished with a season-high 54 rebounds in the win, good for the most by the program since Dec. 11, 2020 against San Diego Christian.
  • Neubert has averaged 18.0 rebounds per game in WNIT action.
