Bunnell Deals, Sim and Peraza Homer in One-Run Loss at UC Irvine

San Diego drops 3-2 decision to Anteaters on Tuesday night

IRVINE, Calif. — San Diego baseball (14-16-1, 7-5 WCC) staked itself to an early lead on Tuesday night against UC Irvine (19-10, 5-7 Big West) but could not hang on to secure the win, suffering a taut 3-2 defeat at Anteater Ballpark despite home runs from Kevin Sim and Angelo Peraza and a dominant performance on the mound from Jack Bunnell.

SIM, PERAZA POWER UP
  • Sim got the scoring started in the top of the second with a towering solo home run, effortlessly driving a 0-2 fastball the other way to give the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.
  • After UC Irvine answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to tie it, Peraza put USD back in front with a solo shot of his own, hammering the second pitch he saw in the top of the sixth over the left-field wall to make it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
  • The Anteaters immediately responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie it, then pulled ahead in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to secure a 3-2 advantage that dealt San Diego a tough loss by the same score at Anteater Ballpark.
BUNNELL DOMINATES AS PART OF ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE ON MOUND
  • Drake Frize and Aídan Gonzalez began Tuesday night's game with a pair of scoreless innings before Nick Suspenzi passed the baton to Jack Bunnell, who turned in the Toreros' most impressive pitching performance of the evening by striking out all five batters he faced as he completed 1.2 perfect frames after entering with two runners aboard and one out in the third.
  • Tristan LaMaison was next with a scoreless fifth before Peter Michael allowed a single run across 0.2 innings of work.
  • Ryan Robinson extinguished the Anteater threat in the sixth enroute to 1.1 scoreless frames, then Mikiah Negrete closed the game out with an inning of his own, allowing one run on a hit and a walk.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sim's homer on Tuesday night was his team-leading 11th of 2023.
  • The Toreros' two total longballs on Tuesday marked their WCC-leading 33rd and 34th of the season.
  • Peraza and Sim were the only two Toreros to drive in or score a run on Tuesday.
  • James Arakawa and Sim drew USD's only walks of the evening with one apiece.
  • Bunnell's five strikeouts at Anteater Ballpark were a career-high.
