SAN DIEGO — San Diego volleyball head coach
Jennifer Petrie on Tuesday afternoon announced the Toreros' 2023 non-conference slate, completing their fall schedule. USD
released its West Coast Conference matchups earlier this month.
The Toreros will play 10 non-conference matches in 2023, with eight on the road and two at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. This year's schedule features six teams that appeared in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, as well as 2022 National Invitational Volleyball Championship winner Boston College.
San Diego will open the 2023 season in Hawaii, facing Oregon on Friday, August 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. USD will remain in Honolulu that weekend to face Hawaii on Saturday, August 26 and Northwestern on Sunday, August 27.
The Toreros' 2023 home opener is set for Thursday, August 31, when San Diego hosts Tennessee in the USD Invitational. The 7:00 p.m. match will mark the Toreros' first in the Jenny Craig Pavilion since their second-round NCAA Tournament win over Washington State last December. After a day off on September 1, San Diego will continue the tournament on September 2 against Boston College.
Next up, San Diego will travel to Los Angeles to take on against Marist (Sept. 8), UC Davis (Sept. 9), and USC (Sept. 10) at the Trojans' Galen Center.
The non-conference slate will wrap up in Atlanta with a pair of matches at O'Keefe Gym against Georgia Tech (Sept. 16) and Georgia (Sept. 17) before WCC play begins on September 23 versus Saint Mary's.
San Diego won 31 games in 2022 (including a perfect 18-0 West Coast Conference record) and reached the NCAA National Semifinal for the first time ever after achieving a No. 2 national ranking, marking the most successful season in program history.
The Toreros are set to return 11 letterwinners from last year's Final Four squad, including 2022 All-WCC First Team selection/2022 VolleyballMag.com All-American Honorable Mention
Leyla Blackwell and 2022 All-WCC Honorable Mention
Haylee Stoner.
Including Blackwell and Stoner, six of USD's 11 returning letterwinners saw action in the team's 2022 NCAA National Semifinal match against No. 1 Texas.
Transfers
Anni Evans (setter, Nebraska) and
Amber Stivrins (outside hitter, Georgia) have joined the Toreros this spring in addition to four incoming freshmen. Evans and Stivrins both bring considerable postseason experience, having helped their teams to the NCAA Final Four and Elite Eight, respectively. USD's crop of first-year players includes 2022-2023 Gatorade Arizona Volleyball Player of the Year
Nemo Beach and 2022 Trinity League Most Valuable Player
Liv Hertzog.
