Beach Shines in Tough Season Opener

Freshman tallied team-high 10 kills in Hawaii as No. 13 USD fell 3-0 to No. 9 Oregon

HONOLULU — Freshman Nemo Beach tallied a team-high 10 kills in her college debut on Friday night, but No. 13 San Diego volleyball (0-1, 0-0 WCC) dropped a tough season opener to No. 9 Oregon, falling to the Ducks (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) by a 3-0 margin at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic.

The Toreros fell in the first set by a 25-21 margin, lost the second by a score of 25-22, and were defeated 25-13 in Friday night's third and final set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - No. 9 Oregon, 25-21
  • USD trailed early on before Beach's first college kill knotted the score at 4-4.
  • After falling behind through the middle stages of the first set, Haylee Stoner brought San Diego back within one with a service ace.
  • An Oregon attack error on the ensuing point tied the set once again, this time at 17-17.
  • The Toreros cut a late Oregon lead to just two points at 23-21 on a kill from Stoner but got no closer, falling to the Ducks by a 25-21 margin in Friday's first set.
Second Set - No. 9 Oregon, 25-22
  • Aided by kills from Leyla Blackwell, Kylie Pries, and Beach, San Diego established an early 5-2 lead as the second set got underway.
  • Back-to-back service aces from Haylee Stoner and an attack error from the Ducks pushed the USD lead to 9-4, prompting an Oregon timeout.
  • The Toreros' advantage stretched to 11-6 out of the break via kills from Blackwell and Beach, then kept their lead at five points later on when Amber Stivrins found her mark to make it 14-9.
  • Stivrins and Kylie Pries teamed up to keep the Ducks at bay with kills in the set's middle stages, bringing the score to 16-11 in favor of USD.
  • Oregon gradually mounted a comeback as the second set progressed, tying the score at 19 and 20 before pulling ahead by a 21-20 margin on a San Diego attack error.
  • A late 5-0 run from the Ducks earned them a 24-20 lead and an eventual 25-22 victory in the set, putting them ahead 2-0 in the match.
Third Set - No. 9 Oregon 25-13
  • San Diego came out strong in Friday's final set, jumping out to an early 4-2 lead after Stivrins notched a service ace.
  • Oregon tied the score at 4-4 on a USD attack error and never looked back, dealing the Toreros a tough 3-0 loss in their season opener after taking the third set by a 25-13 margin.

  • Beach paced the San Diego offense in what marked her first college match, totaling 10 kills while hitting a team-best .400.
  • Stivrins was next with eight kills, followed by Pries (six), Stoner (five), and Blackwell (four).
  • Stoner led the match with a career-high three service aces.
  • Alex Hoglund led USD with 18 assists, while Olivia Bennett and Madi Allen tied for the team high with 10 digs apiece.
  • Anna Jaworowski registered the first assist of her college career and set a new career high with five digs.
