Long Road Stint Ends with Loss at No. 10 Georgia Tech

San Diego volleyball drops 3-0 decision to Yellow Jackets at O'Keefe Gym to wrap up five-match road swing

ATLANTA — San Diego volleyball (4-6, 0-0 WCC) tested No. 10 Georgia Tech in all three sets on Sunday afternoon but could not overcome the Yellow Jackets (9-1, 0-0 ACC) to secure a win, dropping a 3-0 decision at O'Keefe Gym to conclude the Georgia Tech Classic.

The Toreros fell to No. 10 Georgia Tech by scores of 28-26, 25-21, and 25-15 as they wrapped up both a five-match road swing and non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - No. 10 Georgia Tech, 28-26
  • USD trailed early on in Sunday afternoon's opening set but rallied to tie the score at 6-6 on a kill from Amber Stivrins.
  • A combo block from Haylee Stoner and Isadora Tercariol followed by a kill from Tercariol put the Toreros up by an 8-6 margin, but the Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a 3-0 run to take a 9-8 lead.
  • San Diego was behind until late in the set when it tied the score at 23-23 on a Georgia Tech attack error.
  • Kills from Blackwell and Tercariol fended off set point but the Yellow Jackets eventually prevailed, pulling ahead 1-0 in the match with a 28-26 decision in the first.
Second Set - No. 10 Georgia Tech, 25-21
  • The Toreros jumped ahead 4-1 to begin Sunday's second set and led by a five-point margin when Stivrins hammered another kill to make it 12-7.
  • USD was up until late in the set, when Georgia Tech tied it at 18-18 on a Torero attack error.
  • A 19-19 tie then gave way to a 20-19 Yellow Jacket advantage, one that they held until securing a 25-21 win, putting Georgia Tech ahead 2-0 in the match.
Third Set - No. 10 Georgia Tech, 25-15
  • San Diego never led in Sunday's third and final set, but was within one point early on when the Yellow Jackets led 5-4.
  • After trailing by as many as four across the set's middle stages, a service ace from Madi Allen brought USD back within one at 16-15, prompting a Georgia Tech timeout.
  • The Yellow Jackets came out of the break strong, ripping off a 9-0 run to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Stivrins, Leyla Blackwell, and Kylie Pries all totaled seven kills on Sunday, hitting .000, .238, and .250, respectively.
  • Blackwell paced the USD defense with five total blocks, including two solo efforts.
  • Tercariol recorded 21 assists, five digs, three kills, and a block assist.
  • Allen had a team-high 11 digs and added three assists.
  • Haylee Stoner and Allen notched the Toreros' lone two service aces.
UP NEXT
