TORRANCE, Calif. – Behind several personal bests, the San Diego cross country program turned in a successful season-opening race at the LMU South Bay Twilight on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five members of the San Diego women's cross country program took home top-20 finishes, led by Daniella Hubble, who set a 6K PR of 21:27.2.
- Gianna Sbarbaro and Aryam Jaimes were right behind her, crossing the finish at nearly identical times for 13th and 14th place.
- Ultimately, the women's side was just barely edged out for second place as a unit, with USC taking second at 67 points.
- On the men's side, the Toreros were led by Russell Gokemeijer, who tallied an 18th place finish.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Jillian Lange led all freshmen on both teams with an 18th place finish in her collegiate debut. She finished third among freshmen in the field, behind UCLA's Brooke Johnston and USC's Majourie Lopez.
- Gokemeijer bested every runner from Pepperdine, who finished ahead of San Diego on total points.
The Toreros are back in action on Sept. 15, traveling to Notre Dame to compete in the National Catholic Invite in South Bend, Ind.
