SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-10, 0-1 WCC) had a game-winning opportunity come up just short, as the Toreros fell to Pepperdine (5-9, 1-0 WCC) on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Kylie Horstmeyer led the Toreros with 13 points, while
Kasey Neubert added a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides struggled on the offensive end out of the gate, as the Toreros managed a 9-8 lead in the first quarter, with each team shooting under 25 percent from the field.
- Neubert was an offensive bright spot in the opening quarter, with five points and three rebounds.
- Both offenses began to find their comfort zones, as the Toreros built a four-point lead before an 8-2 Pepperdine run made it 17-12.
- The Toreros were able to come out more aggressively in the second half after trailing by three at the break by going on a 10-2 run.
- Horstmeyer tallied six of those 10 points, as the Toreros used it to build a lead as high as seven in the quarter.
- After another layup by Horstmeyer to take a lead of eight early in the fourth quarter, the Waves started to claw back in the game.
- Neubert stopped a run by Pepperdine to make it 49-45 with 4:16 remaining, but the Waves continued to chip away.
- A jumper by Jane Nwaba gave Pepperdine the lead with 30 seconds remaining at 52-51.
- The Toreros were able to spring a successful play for Jess Finney on the next possession, who could not hit the three pointer and forced Pepperdine to the free throw line, where they hit just one of two.
- From there, the Toreros nearly emerged with the win, as Veronica Sheffey's shot rimmed out, but she was fouled in the process with just eight seconds remaining,
- Sheffey made one of two free throws, but Pepperdine's Jorynn Ross traveled with the rebound, giving San Diego one last chance.
- A late look by Harsimran Kaur would not fall, as the Waves escaped with a one-point win.
TORERO TIDBITS
