Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Toreros Outlasted by Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, Calif. – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-11, 0-2 WCC) held a halftime lead but could not hang on, falling 67-59 to Saint Mary's (8-8, 1-1 WCC) on Saturday night at the University Credit Union Pavilion.

Kasey Neubert led the way for the Toreros with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Veronica Sheffey added 12 points and six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams were able to find some momentum early in the game, with six first quarter points from Neubert and a Jess Finney three pointer to build a lead at the end of the period.
  • After some back-and-forth action that featured more three pointers from Finney and Sheffey, the Toreros were able to create a bit of separation.
  • San Diego ended the first half on a 6-2 run over the final five minutes of the second quarter, while smothering the Gaels offense.
  • However, the Gaels came out of the gate in the third quarter with energy and went on a run following a Harsimran Kaur layup that made it 33-27.
  • Saint Mary's went on a 10-3 run and took their first lead of the second half with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter.
  • By the end of the third, that lead had grown to seven for the Gaels, despite four additional points from Neubert.
  • The Saint Mary's lead would balloon to 12 with 4:03 left in the fourth quarter, but the Toreros attempted to claw back in the game.
  • Sheffey, Kylie Horstmeyer and Neubert each hit three pointers down the stretch to cut the lead to six, but the Toreros could get no closer, despite some missed free throws by the Gaels down the stretch.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Neubert tallied her sixth double-double of the season in the loss.
  • Neubert (813) also passed 800 career points with her 18 points on the night.
