SAN DIEGO – With the long offseason now in the rear view mirror, the San Diego women's basketball team (0-0, 0-0 WCC) will open the 2024-25 regular season on Wednesday evening, hosting Biola (0-0, 0-0 PacWest) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The game will be the first of a doubleheader with USD's men's basketball program, who plays at 8:00 p.m., against Rider.
LAST TIME OUT
- San Diego closed out their 2023-24 season in the second round of the West Coast Conference Tournament, as they bested ninth-seeded Pepperdine before coming up short against five seed Pacific to end the campaign.
- Finishing her penultimate season as a Torero, guard Kylie Horstmeyer turned in a great performance against Pacific as she scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with three assists and a pair of steals.
OPPONENT HISTORY
- Wednesday's game will the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs as Biola holds the 6-3 overall advantage, but the Toreros have won three straight games against the Eagles.
- The two teams last played two seasons ago at Jenny Craig Pavilion, where USD earned a 75-47 victory on Nov. 11, 2022. It was an all-around balanced attack for the Toreros as they had four players in double figures, as Kasey Neubert's 14 points led the way.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- The Toreros are ecstatic to showcase a revamped roster that features five returners and nine new faces in the fold.
- Leading the way for San Diego as a key returner is Horstmeyer who is set to compete in her fifth season as a Torero coming off a season where she averaged 10.3 PPG and three rebounds with 16 more assists than turnovers.
- Joining the squad this season from just down the road, transfer guard Ava Ranson and forward Truitt Reilly are expected to play key roles for San Diego this season in the team's starting lineup. Last year they both helped Cal State San Marcos reach the Division II Final Four.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Despite starting their season at home, the Toreros will have to wait more than three weeks for their next home games as they will host the Thanksgiving Classic on both Nov. 28 and 29 with doubleheaders on both days.
- The Toreros have won their last three season openers dating back to the 2021-22 season.
- San Diego head coach Cindy Fisher enters the new season just two wins away for 400 in her career, as she enters play with 398 victories in her time at both San Diego and Wyoming.
