San Diego Dominates CSUN at Home

Toreros defeat Matadors 74-52 to close out non-conference play

SAN DIEGO — San Diego women's basketball (4-5, 0-0 WCC) erupted in the second quarter against CSUN (2-8, 0-2 Big West) and did not look back as it dominated the Matadors by a 74-50 margin to earn a convincing win in its last non-conference game of 2024. 

The back court of Kylie Horstmeyer and Ava Ranson led the way for USD, combining for 21 points and eight assists to propel USD to victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A nice pump fake and a layup from Truitt Reilly got the scoring started for the Toreros in Saturday afternoon's contest. 
  • A nice dish from Horstmeyer at the 6:46 minute of the first quarter found Lauren McCall at the top of the key for a three to put USD up 6-3.
  • The Matadors ended the opening quarter of play with a 9-0 run to claim a 16-13 lead. 
  • A clean pull-up jumper from Horstmeyer pulled San Diego within two points at the 7:19 mark in the second quarter. 
  • Ranson followed suit with a jumper of her own to tie the game up at 19 apiece, before Horstmeyer hit again to give her team the 21-19 lead with 6:35 to go in the half. 
  • The Toreros ended the first half on fire with a 20-7 run to give them a commanding 41-26 lead at the break. 
  • Horstmeyer found Ranson bolting down the floor for a fast break layup to start the scoring in the second half for USD.
  • Reilly converted a fast-break layup of her own at the 5:44 minute mark in the third quarter, extending USD's lead to 49-30. 
  • San Diego kept their foot on the gas to close out the third quarter, allowing just six points to give themselves a healthy 60-32 lead heading into the final quarter. 
  • Claire Gallagher got herself on the board to start the fourth quarter with a clean layup. 
  • Jayden Rhodes grabbed an offensive rebound and a put back with 3:16 to go in the game to make it 71-39. 
  • The Toreros drained out the clock in the final minute of play to earn a 74-52 victory over CSUN.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • The Torero bench outscored CSUN's bench by a 35-8 margin. 
  • The USD defense limited the Matadors to just six points in the third quarter. 
  • Every player who saw the floor for San Diego on Saturday afternoon registered at least one point, with eight different players recording five or more points. 
  • Reilly had nine points with seven rebounds.
  • Dresha Moore earned herself eight points alongside eight rebounds, a pair of assists, two steals, and a block. 
CATCHING UP WITH THE TOREROS NEXT UP
San Diego will remain at home on Thursday night to take on the Washington State Cougars (4-6, 0-0 WCC) as they open up 2024 West Coast Conference play. Tip-off in the Jenny Craig Pavilion is set for 6:00 p.m.
